Woj reported this… Kind of bummed I wanted to see where this kid got drafted… He thinks he can get drafted higher next year.

Let me guess…he can’t "straight-up Bogdan" either, can he?

Half surprised because he had potential to be a lottery pick, but makes sense to wait when next year is a little weaker plus he gets a year to improve his stock in addition to the quality of the draft being a little less.

wow, i figured he needed a few more years, but he was a first round lock. He will only be more nitpicked going forward. He has some work to do to reach lotto level, but i think he can do it. Defenitely somebody worth keeping an eye on overseas this coming year. athletic 7 footer with good shooting touch.

Porzingis shoots 30% from 3pt. He’s not a great shooter yet. However… he already plays against pros, he is a good pick and roll and weak side defender. Not a great rebounder, though. How is he much different from Vonleh?

Of course, no one is saying he should go above Vonleh, but they do share similarities in their games. If Porzingis bulks up, which is unlikely, he would be better than Vonleh, but he’s not too far below.

seems to think he can be a Top-5 pick next year.  Not sure I quite agree with that; but this year he was going in the 20s, and I think next year he can be a lottery pick.  Smart move.

I agree with Ford. To me that says that he isn’t a Top 5 pick next year at the moment, but he has the potential to play his way into the Top 5 if he keeps developing. Not predicting it will happen, but if everything goes right for him it’s a possibility. The upside is there.

and Rubio are the only two truly international prospects to go in the top five since Bargnani went #1 in 2006.  Betting on a truly international prospect to go high isn’t a great idea.  Hard to see him topping Alexander, Okafor, Johnson, Mudiay and any other American college player who solidifies their name next season.  Tough to overcome the distance and minimal exposure compared to American college players.

Jonas V and Rubio are the only Top 5 since 2006 but Yi went 6 in 2007, Galinari went 6 in a loaded 2008, Vesley and Biyombo were 6/7 in 2011 with not truly international Kanter going 3, and Dante Exum is going Top 5 this year(maybe even Top 2). So pointing out the few Top 5 international picks doesn’t tell the whole story that there are a bunch more guys that were in the conversation for teams to take Top 5.

I have to say that I admire it when a player in his position does this. When someone can be a top 5 pick then it is stupid to come back, but if you are going to go mid first round at best, and you feel like the following year you can really improve your stock then it takes some balls to make that decision.

I mean it takes some balls to do what Marcus Smart did too, but it was dumb. This situation is more of a calculated risk IMO that is more likely to pay off.

I had never heard of the kid before about a month ago, but I’ll be following him closely now.

Smart may have cost himself some money by doing that but I’d hardly consider his decision stupid considering his reasoning for staying was more to do with coming back to play with his best friend/almost step brother for one more year considering the kid had a pretty rough childhood, and try to win a championship- something not out of the question before Cobbins went down and Clark did some dumb things off the court. Money is nice but that’s not a situation he’d ever find himself in again

Would this have something to do with the buyout?

His "promise" from a team in this draft wasn’t high enough, so less money for him to spend on the buyout.

Maybe next year, no buyout or it is less money, and obviously if he is drafted higher than he was expecting to go this year he will have much more money to spend on the buyout.

There might be more height in the draft next year, so while the draft may not be as deep as this one it could be deeper for the number of tall players.  Tall as in power forward and center types.

Doubt it’s the buyout in this case. If he was to stay in the draft there is the chance that whoever drafted him would do so knowing from the start that he planned to stay in Europe for another year regardless of the buyout to allow him to develop more as a player without taking up an NBA roster spot, counting against the cap, and not using up a year of his rookie contract when he is still a work in progress
