lakreParticipantThe draft is so much fun. Porzingis and Willy Hernangomez (just one year older than Kristaps) have been playing together all year long, with Willy being a much more determinant and solid player. Instead Porzingis is #4 and Willy #35.
It is true that Kristaps’ potential is off the charts, but the better player RIGHT NOW, and according to this previous season, is Willy.
Here you can see a recap of the games played in ACB of both of them:
#4 Kristaps Porzingis:
Remarkable games:
– 18 pts, 7 rebounds
– 17 pts, 8 rebounds
– 19 pts, 7 rebounds

#35 Willy Hernangomez:
Remarkable games:
– 29 pts, 13 rebounds (against FC Barcelona) – Earned Best performance of the day, compared to NBA player of the week.
– 21 pts, 7 rebounds
– 23 pts, 10 rebounds

XYRYXParticipantYep the Sixers actually traded one of their 13 big man on draft day…
I think this is a really nice move by the Knicks but I’m not sure when he will come over, if he comes.
He has a contract with Real Madrid through 16/17 and is currently on loan to Sevilla. Reports are that he has a buyout clause in his contract (not surprising) but the price is unknown to me and I couldn’t find infos about that.
I think Madrid at least wants to have him on their roster once until he leaves so I think he might play at least next year for Madrid.
Anyone with information about his contract status?

lakreParticipantI also think Madrid is recalling him back and will stay there for, at least, a couple of years. His idol is Felipe Reyes, both have a great relationship from previous years in the club and Felipe will be a great mentor for him.
I don’t know the details of his contract.

European BasketballerParticipantReal’s president already said that both Hernangomez and Dani Diez will beback in the team next year. They were just on loan this season. I would expect Diez to have a much more important role than Hernangomez. But Diez would still be a small role player in the team.

EndlessknightParticipantNo it’s not suprising since all contracts in Spain, not just basketball ones, legally must have buyout clause. It’s just an aspect of Spanish contract law. It’s been reported that Ronaldo’s buyout clause is 1 billion euros. So just having a buyout clause doesn’t mean its reasonable.

HitsterParticipantIf he is a 2nd rounder then the Knicks can give him a salary to cover his buyout if needed.

XYRYXParticipantSorry guys but I have to share one more thought on here about the reactions Porzingis received not only when he was selected but also about what the so called ‘media’ did and does after that.
In another thread where the question was about how much trust we have in Phil I already said I’m not actually believing that they are going to be really successful down the road with Fisher as Phils puppy and a roster that basically is none, let alone one where you can run a system with that is not proven in todays NBA but I’m embarrassed how Kristaps is beeing bashed from all sides.
I know it’s Steven A. Smith and we are used to sh!t like that but to me this guy is everything that is wrong with the media nowadays.
The time for the Knicks is now right??? I think the time was always now for the last 15 years with this franchise and a ‘fanbase’ who reacts to a highly skilled 19 year old foreign young man like that IS the reason why players ‘bust’ to me.
It’s okay to have expectations that were different to what was the outcome of this draft but honestly they came away with Porzingis, who basically everyone had top 6 or 7 come draft day, added Grant who was considered one of the best and proven point guards of this draft class and traded for Hernangomez who is one of the most skilled old fashioned Center prospects we have in europe. Hernangomez is under contract with the reigning ACB (for the 32nd time), National Cup, National Supercup and Euroleague Champions Real Madrid and as most people know now on loan to former Porzingis club Sevilla. That means they won all 4 titles as the first spanish team ever. To me that is a pretty decent outcome if you consider they ‘only’ had this one #4 pick going into the draft.
It’s okay to to think other players should be a Knick now but this teams time is now?? We don’t know 3/5 of the starting players next season and a ‘project’ like Porzingis seems to be the worst that could have happend to all the guys from the big apple. Wo really thinks that any other rookie will be going to kill it in the triangle next year??? Mudiay, Winslow, Johnson – really?
To me a fanbase has to carry a team and the players. Especially young players need a good enviroment to feel needed, grow into their roles and to gain confidence. Not only is it hard enough to come to the states as a foreign teenager but to play in NY is clearly one of the biggest challenges you can have. And to get a reaction like that might be tough to swollow for some kids but Kristaps had the right answer for that:
“I mean a lot of fans weren’t happy that they drafted me, but I have to do everything that’s in my hands to turn those booing fans into clapping fans,” Porzingis said. “There’s nothing I can do. I was happy about it. I want to be a part of this organization, and I know the fans are a little harsh sometimes but that’s how it is here in New York and I’m ready for it.”
I really don’t know if he ever will reach his full potential or if he will be any good while on his rookie contract but I really can’t but root for a guy like this. He wants to be part of this organisation and accepts the challenge. I really can’t say that about the Knick fans and the media who is just asking for a savior to turn around what other could not do. The sadest thing is if he does indeed play well, the same fans who booed him are going to wear his jersey very soon and will act as nothing happend last night.
I really hope he will turn some heads there and maybe the fact that he played in europe in other strict offensive systems helps him learn the triangle better. What a shame to get a welcome like this and ESPN is finally off my list as a serious jounalism. They act like this is entertainment but in reality they can’t even back up their personal opinions with facts and to scream and yell at each other or into the camera is childish and unprofessional and stinging on the fans who basically don’t know anything about him is really really piss poor.
Some teams and fans don’t deserve success and I really hope Kristaps can prove them wrong here.

Bed HeadParticipantAnd lived down to their reputation. However, having said that, the Knicks themselves bear much of the blame for this embarrassment. The fans/media made it quite clear from the very beginning that they did not want Porzingis and would not "accept" him. Creating a toxic atmosphere so poisonous it would/will be almost impossible for him to succeed.
Which is why I (among others) kept saying over and over that NY would be the worst possible landing spot for Porzingis (Philly being 2nd). In fact, I repeated myself so often, even I’m sick of hearing me say it.
Oh, and XYRYX, I’m pretty sure that was my thread you are referring to, actually:

European BasketballerParticipantNBA drafted 3 players from one of the by far and away worst teams of Spanish League and 2nd tier European league (level below Euroleague), Eurocup.
Pretty much says all you need to know right there.
