knicksfan7ParticipantThis stat has been on my mind lately for numerous reasons. One reason is that I think it is more accurate than a player’s FG%. Another reason is it tells the player’s effectiveness of a player’s scoring abilities. Interesting is Kobe Bryant has a very good FG%, but is an average at best scoring efficiency, guys like Jamal Crawford have higher scoring efficiency than Kobe. So does this simply mean that Kobe is just a good shooter, but an average scorer. I am not saying that I don’t want Kobe as my #1 option nor taking the last shot to win the game, what I am saying is that this stat should have more importance over a guy’s FG% or PPG. What do you guys think???

The8thDeadlySinParticipantLOL… I dont want to start some huge debate but I think Kobe is less efficient because when he tries to score, he is going against the other teams best defender, he has the entire team looking to play help side defense against him, and coaches game plan for him.. Crawford is great but he isnt a better scorer than Kobe.. I think the only guys that might be better scorers than Kobe might be Durant and Melo… Crawford is efficient because he plays off of Joe Johnson.. That is a good stat until you watch defensive schemes and when and where the player is scoring…

knicksfan7ParticipantI am using that as examples, I am by no means saying that Jamal Crawford is better than Kobe in any respects. My point is that is it a more accurate stat than FG% and PPG??

The8thDeadlySinParticipantUmm….IDK.. lol

knicksfan7ParticipantYeah that’s the thing I am unsure myself. I am unsure as to say whether who is and who isn’t effective when taking 20 shots a game as to a guy taking 25 shots a game.

quinceyhodgesi dont really go by any of those because it doesnt take in account one of the points that 8th made. who is checking the guy. as well as if the guy is getting double teammed. same reasons i dont go with the per48 another reason i dont go by that is that no one is gonna play 48min a whole season and it doesnt take into accoutn how tired the player would be and it goes by if the players is playing with the same strength that he was playign with atthe beginning of the game

knicksfan7ParticipantPer48 is an inaccurate stat because no one plays 48 minutes, rather per36 is much more accurate considering that much of the league is physically capable of playing 36 minutes a game. Though I do agree with 8th about defenses. My point being that over the course of a game who do I want shooting the ball the most. Monta Ellis who is in the top 10 in PPG, is not an effective scorer considering the amount of shots he has to take to get to 20 points.

quinceyhodgesthe best way is to watch a player play thats what i say. better then any stats i can think of.

knicksfan7ParticipantI agree with you. Though, so much of the time especially with college players we argue about the players competition if they come out of a smaller conference rather than how much game the guy has game.

LawDeeZeeParticipanti agree with what everyone else is saying … there are too many circumstances involved in basketball to put that much of an emphasis on these kinds of statistics — if you’re the number 1 option on a team, you’re going against the other teams premeir defender and for someone like kobe, teams entire game plans sometimes focus on taking him away or making things difficult for him

knicksfan7ParticipantYeah that’s true, but I believe of all the stats regarding a players scoring abilities this one is the most accurate, I do believe (and should have) mentioned regarding college players. I am a big stat guy, but by no means do I put any stats over seeing the guy play. I know stats can be skewed as well, that’s why you have to look for the most accurate ones that tell the most.

quinceyhodgesi found out that the best way to figure out how well a player plays is through this thing called synergy technology stats. they tell you how a player plays defense one on one, how often some one scores going left or right, midrang jumper percentage, im mean these guys are true geeks. its a stats person dream fromt hose who are reall into that stuff

knicksfan7ParticipantI have to check that out, thanks for bringing it up. I find stats interesting, but don’t let it take things over. I think stats are better for marginal players who lack minutes but if they’re in good enough shape to play extended minutes stats can give at least a baseline on what they can do in extended minutes.
