Finally the Division Title won’t automatically award teams a top 4 seed. It was so pointless when a 4 seed would have a worse record than a 5 seed. Then on top of that the 5 seed would still get home court because of their better record.
Unfortunately, it took the Spurs and Clippers being a first round matchup to make it happen. Portland had the 6th best record in the West but was still awarded the 4th seed which pushed Memphis and San Antonio down to the 5th and 6th seeds respectively. Both Memphis and San Antonio were 55-27 while Portland was 51-31.

omphalosParticipantYeah I never quite understood why winning your division earned such a high reward when the borders are pretty arbitrary.
Good simple change.

llperezI don’t even look at divisions as being important. I would get rid of them altogether and just have two conferences.

BleedGreen808ParticipantI saw a tweet on Hoopshype saying that would be the next step and could happen as soon as the 2016-17 season. I know Adam Silver had also mentioned if they removed the automatic top 4 seed for division winners then he didn’t see the point of having divisions.

DondiJohnParticipantI dont see the point of conferences anymore, aside from the all-star game. Personally, I’d want the ASG winner (East or West) to get homecourt advantage in the finals. I’d remove the top 8 from both conferences advancing to the playoffs and just get the top 16 teams regardless of conference. I hate the thought of the Cavs running thru anyone in the East while the west has top 4-5 teams battling for only one slot

omphalosParticipantI think conferences have an important role to play still.
Having teams have to go through the same teams to make the Finals breeds rivalries, which are great for the league.
It also acts as an incentive for talent to spread across conferences.
You don’t think more players would go to LA as free agents if they weren’t in the West?
The East offers an "easier" path right now, which gives teams without other particular advantages an appeal for free agents to prevent the best teams hoarding them all.
For example, this off-season saw Greg Monroe sign with the Bucks because they offered a real chance at making the playoffs, rather than teams with money in the West.
However, I do think that some of the teams in the "West" should be swapped to the East, where they are actually located.
Finally, if the two biggest stars are in different conferences (as it has been for years, with Larry and Magic, Jordan and Barkley, Drexler, Malone/Stockton), Kobe and Lebron, now KD and Lebron), then it means any playoff series will be played on the biggest stage, rather than some quirk of the seedings meaning they meet up in the semis or something, rendering the Finals a moot point.

JMoney31ParticipantDivisions have value, but the winner should not get a top 4 seed. the divisions help for scheduleing. you currently play teams in your division 4 times, the rest of the conference 3 times ( with a couple of teams 4) and opposite conference 2 times. I would keep them strictle for that, but have no reward to winning.

llperezyou actually play more teams 4 times from other division then you play 3 times. Of the 10 non division teams in your conference, you play 6 of them 4 times and 4 of them 3 times. Basically divisions are irrelevent in basketball.

Bucks1234ParticipantIt’s about damn time!! Teams with worst records getting placed higher just because they won their crappy division was ludacris! Now the NFL needs to fallow suit! I’m guessing 3 out of top 4 teams in the East will be from the Central Division just watch. Cavs, Bulls, and Bucks in top 4…
