I had a recent discussion with a couple of friends about how good I think Harrison Barnes can be as an individual player if he were to sign elsewhere. I got to thinking about a number of players who have had much more success on a personal level in different enviornments because their current team is only utilizing them as a 4th+ option. Reggie Jackson when he was in OKC is an example of a player that needed to blossom elsewhere, Harrison Barnes should be.

    Any players come to mind?

I think enes kanter is a guy that could put up big numbers ( probably about 20-10) on a team where he was a number one option but it wouldn’t necessarily translate to wins.

Kevin love, of course, has already shown what he is capable of statistically when you run your offense through him.

       +6 for this!

       Enes Kanter sucks.

The Jazz swapped him for a second round pick and still won the trade.

I still don’t understand why Kanter doesn’t put all his effort in getting at least a decent defender. I mean there are other players who have just as little athleticism as him (e.g. Pachulia, Gasol’s), but who are good or decent defenders. If he would upgrade his defense to make it somewhat acceptable he could be a max guy in this league!

Looking at players who could put up big stats on other teams (if not be franchise alterring stars) I think some younger guys like Donatas Motiejunas, TJ Warren, Evan Fournier, Doug McDermott, Will Barton (kind of already broke out), Mike Muscala, and Jordan Adams would qualify. Pretty much all of these players are subpar defenders but show potential on offense (Reggie Jackson is a terrible defender for what its worth). Warren and Barton are effective scorers without being volume three point shooters, Fournier could excel as a primary ballhandler, Motie and Muscala have been very efficient when played in the right lineups, McBuckets could bulk up and be a small ball four, and Adams was a great defender and shooter in college who had great projections coming out.

Boban! He’s probably not physically capable of 35 minutes a night, but it sure is fun envisioning him getting 25 minutes per game with Dallas, the Lakers, Portland, or the Knicks. Free Boban!

    Olynyk.

Stevens doesn’t play him enough for some reason, and he doesn’t run many plays for him.

Olynyk should be getting the ball in the post almost every time up the floor. He has a complete post game and multiple unblockable shots, but he gets maybe 1-2 post ups per game.

Part of it is that the Celtics don’t have many decent post-entry passers. Bradley, Crowder, are limited passers, and IT and Turner are always going to look for their own shot first, even when they don’t have a shot.

Luckily IT and Turner can usually get their shot off, and with decent results. The rest of the team is not very good at creating their own shots, which is part of the reason the ball gets passed around the perimeter so much.

Olynyk would greatly benefit from playing with a true point guard, and for a rebuilding team that would give Olynyk all the minutes and possessions that he needs to develop to his fullest.

For some reason Brad Stevens holds Olynyk to a tougher standard than everybody else. Stevens is willing to lose games riding IT4 and Crowder and Bradley and Sully when they are shooting poorly. Stevens won’t bench or limit the minutes of those guys after a bad game.

But Olynyk gets punished regularly, and there are many nights where Olynyk is only played 15 minutes or so. In almost all of those games, the Celtics lose.

Stevens should be starting Olynyk, and forcing the ball into the post to Olynyk early and often in every game. But Stevens would literally have to force IT to do it, because IT never would by choice.

And guys like Crowder, Smart, Turner, and Sully are always looking for their own shot, even if they shoot 3s at a much lower % than Olynyk.

All Olynyk needs are a couple layups or post scores to heat up, and after that he can patrol the 3 point line with a lot more confidence than just sending him out there 8 minutes into the game and expecting him to be hot from 3. Very few players, especially 7 footers, can excel under those standards and short leash.

I’m not saying Olynyk would be a star on another good team right now, but he could definitely make a bad team mediocre right away, scoring 20+ each night and shooting 38-45% from 3 on high volume.

He’s perfect off the bench for a contender. I don’t think he would be as effective playing long minutes.

Lol NBA’s current nickname game really needs a lot of work. I’m pretty sure we’re running out of 2-letter combinations for nicknames. Unless someone called Quebert Zoolander comes along.

Sauce Castillo aside…get back to me you can beat nicknames like:

        • Chocolate Thunder
        • Out of service Pervis
        • The Worm
        • The Round Mound of Rebound
        • Joel Pryzbilla the Vanilla Gorilla

Rodney hood is developing nicely in his second season. If you put on a really bad team (like the sixers) where he was in a featured role I could actually see him putting up some pretty big stats.

    Patty Mills.

Plays team first cos hes with the Spurs and sticks to his role. But could easily start for a lesser team. Scores hyper efficiently and plays pesky defense. High PER.

Stretches the defense and makes very few turnovers.

I agree on Olynyk. When he plays little they lose. No plays are really run for him either. He could be a big scorer if he shot more.

Marcus Smart is another one I must mention.

He’s coming off the bench right now, but was starting over Avery Bradley earlier in the year, before Smart got injured for a little while.

Smart’s feel for the game has really improved, and he’s really a do it all guard who can dominate the game while playing both SG and PG.

The Celtics even started the second half of a Knicks game with Smart guarding Porzingis, and Smart shut him down.

Smart’s a DPOY candidate level defender, one of the better leaders in the NBA, and he’s been shooting lights out from 3 for about a month now.

Most importantly, he’s really learning how to get to the rim, and he’s making great reads on his way to the hoop. He can either power his way for the score or kick it out like a point guard.

And Smart is always coming up with crazy plays to win games. He’s just super clutch, and he can outmuscle everybody on the court most nights.

Hall of Famer in the Dennis Johnson/Chauncey Billups mold, with DWade upside.
