Every now and then, this topic gets brought up on this forum and I decided to be the one to bring it up again now. What the hell happened to the star players’ nicknames? No more Reign Man, Iceman, His Airness, The Admiral, The Dream, The Big Ticket, etc. The more recent ones (The King, Black Mamba) are pretty old already and none of the superstars/stars of the new generation really have a catchy, media-given nickname. They’re all either initials, initials + number or initial plus lastname. The catchiest nicknames we have now are either nicknames the players use for themselves that the media just latched onto (Boogie, Swaggy P – and he isn’t even a real star) or just descriptive ones (The Beard, The Brow, The Greek Freak).

People tried with Durant (Durantula, The Slim Reaper) but they just don’t seem to make nicknames as effectively as before anymore.

Any suggestions for players’ nicknames? Curry, Wall, Lillard, Kyrie, Wiggins, Westbrook, Durant, Griffin and many more all deserve to at least be given an effort to formulate a nickname after.

I just wanted to bring the topic up again for further discussion. Especially this year where more stars seem to have stepped up their games, maybe people here have fresh new ideas for potential nicknames

        • Andrew "Pogo" Wiggins – The spring in his bounce sums it up.
        • Brandon "IgKnight" – There’s no other way to pinpoint the season he is having.
        • Stephen "Chef" Curry – Currently Trending
        • Kyle "The Bully" Lowry – Frame/style of play
        • Zach "The Moonwalker" LaVine – Need I say more?
        • "Fievel" Westbrook – The quick draw celebration after the three-ball.

          • "Dasher Dame" Lillard – As of late, his reel within the paint has been relentless. He’s angry, and holds everyone accountable for accommodating his poster requests.
          • Jeremy "Silence of the Lamb" – Pretty soon, we’ll need a milk carton.
          • "Mojo" or "AccomMOdation" Williams – That box score outburst is still within to light it up.
          • Jeff "Big League" Teague – Currently Trending
          • "Pizza" Jennings – I’m reaching a bit here on this one, but it will make a little sense once you analyze everything. Teammates tip very well after he delivers, because he serves the ball with flare. Had a previous internship in Italy before learning how to create the perfect dish for his current bigs. (Pizza = Piece of Jennings)

And now! For my GRAND Finale…I will pull out my biggest reveal.

Marquis "Little League" Teague – It was only right to piggyback this one.

Nicknames using initials are fairly unoriginal and a truly great nickname evolves as a player develops or rarely he brings it with him into the NBA and can live up to the billing. The ultimate nickname is when he is universally refered to as it such as Magic Johnson.

The Greek Freak seems to be sticking for Giannis especially as he has a long second name which is hard to spell.

I like the Slim Reaper for Kevin Durant but he is basically known as KD.

The Stifle Tower for Rudy Gobert was a great play on his nationality and defensive potential too.

the nickname writes itself. Ender is literally a killer in that book. It’s a great nickname.

I also like Bill Simmons push for Paul George to change his number and be PG13.

I think most of these are on tv reporters. They are the ones who make nicknames made known, so if they keep calling the players PG, KG, CP… i’d say it’s 80% their fault.

I’m sure that Shaq or C-Webb will hand out a few names during the All-Star break. Those two guys have a nack for it around this time of year.

I dont know if many of you guys are Canadians, like myself, but watching Raptors games Matt Devlin and either Leo or Jack are constantly trying to come up with a nickname for Jonas. I dont know where it come from or why it would even be a bit relevant but for a while they were trying to call him "The Big Science". Turrible, just turrible.

Irving’s commercials have given him the nickname of Uncle Drew. I think the commercials are awesome so i hope the nickname sticks around. Any idea when the next chapter will drop???

Lamarcus Aldridge: ‘The Middle Man’ since his mid-range game is so advanced. I know middle man is a perjorative term, but when used affectionately it should be catchy.

John Wall: ‘Slide’. I don’t mind the common ‘JWOW’ moniker, but I think ‘Slide’ would be a great one as well. When he runs in the fastbreak it just seems like he’s going downstream.

Tony Allen: ‘Cuddle’. He plays such tight D it’s like he’s cuddling his assignment. Plus there’s the ironic angle since T. Allen is probably a very uncuddly person.

These are probably lame but it isn’t easy.

Damian Lillard – Sub Zero (He is a cold blooded assassin in clutch time plus he wears the number Zero)

Kyle Korver – Hawkeye (He is a marksmen like the Superhero and he plays for the Hawks)

In this ‘Smitty’s top five plays under the rim’ Steve Smith is coming up with new nicknames every other week. Most of them are ‘mweh’, but some are quite nice and I can even see them stick. Jennings even used his as new name for one of his social media accounts (I believe twitter). I kinda like The Barber and the Busdriver next to the dealer.

    Brandon ‘The Dealer’ Jennings
    Kyie ‘The Busdriver’ Irving
    James ‘The Barber’ Harden
    Stephen ‘The Drycleaner’ Curry
    Kevin ‘Inspector Gadgett’ Durant
    Zach ‘The Lumberjack’ Randolph
    Derrick ‘The Ghost’ Rose
    Rajon ‘The Yoga Instructor’ Rondo
    Manu ‘The Tailor’ Ginobili

Back in the day nicknames were a larger part of the game. I remember in older basketball video games of the 90s & early 00s they actually had a "Nickname" slot on each players biography page, and probably 80% of the league had a nickname. Those were the days.
