Now that the March Madness field is set, everyone gets to project their final 4. After all, now is the best time because in a few days we’re all going to be proven wrong!

Final 4

• Florida – 1 seed and in my opinion the most consistent team in college basketball
• Creighton – I am picking Doug McDermott to show leadership, poise and clutch to take his team on a run. 
• Michigan State – Have a funny feeling Memphis will beat Virginia, and Michigan State will beat Memphis. I really like their team this year. 
• Louisville – Russdiculous is going to go nuts and leave Louisville on a high. 

Bracket Buster

• Oklahoma State – I think they beat #1 Arizona in the second round. Marcus Smart will silence his critics and prove that he really is a winner and leader. 

Wildcard 

• UNC – Have played absolutely uninspiring basketball at times this season, but  times have looked terrific. If they can put together one of those runs in the tourney….who knows?

Final 4:

South -Florida: They have looked good recently and I have no reason to doubt that they can get out of their quadrant. Had Embiid been healthy for Kansas maybe it would look different but I doubt even if he comes back he will provide much if any significant value for the Jayhawks.

West- Arizona: This was the most difficult quadrant for me to pick out of. I like wisconsin, their toughness and ability to defend, but they struggle at times putting the ball in the hoop. Kaminsky was great this weekend in the B1G tournament, Dekker as well, so who knows. Arizona took a loss to UCLA maybe they come back more focused and ready to get back doing what made them a 1 seed. 

East- Michigan State: They are finally healthy. And they ran through the B1G tournament looking like a well oiled machine. Izzo usually has his guys ready to play hard and focused by March, this march will be nothing different.

North- Louisville: I feel as though Louisville is being a tad bit underrated. Even though they didnt set the world ablaze to begin the season with early losses to UNC, Kentucky and Memphis they have been steadily improving and seemingly hit their stride recently. Russ Smith has been as good as anyone in the country over the past couple months of college basketball.

Bracket Buster and Wildcard: I’m going with Kentucky for both of these. Those kids faught back against a tough florida team to make it a game after it appeared to be almost out of reach. As has been the case all year, it depends on what Wildcat’s team shows up. If they show up soft and scared they will get bounced by K-State. If they play tough and together they will get by K-State and I think they have a real shot at knocking off Witchita State who I really am not sold on. Their best win of the year was against who, Saint Louis? By five? I am just not sold by who they played and if they will be prepared for a team with a lot of raw talent like Kentucky. 

If Kentucky gets past Witchita, their next game would potentially be a rematch with Louisville. Kentucky got the best of them early but who knows now.

Championship:  Duke vs. Kansas- This would be REALLY REALLY fun watching Jabari and Andrew  play eachother in the championship would be a media frenzy.  They could be playing for the top pick, but Embiid could steal the show as Duke really has no inside presence.  

 

The wild cards:  Is SDSU at a four seed too high to be a wild card??  They have some impressive wins and I believe they have as good as a shot at the final four as anyone in that bracket.  They are probably the most athletic team in that bracket.  Almost beat Arizona when they had Ashley and their athletisism would give problems to Wisc and Creighton.

I think if you got 1,000 people together to do 1,000 different brackets then I think one of them could get a PERFECT BRACKET a pretty decent percentage of the time (above 50%).  If we don’t get any Florida Gulf Coasts this year, then it might be an easier year for someone to get a perfect bracket.  The one seeds look vulnerable so I can see some brackets with those guys eliminated early (I have 3 number one seeds losing in the first round). 

I would run a regression analysis for each game (somehow) and take the 1,000 most likely scenarios.  That would probably give you around a 50% shot at getting a perfect bracket out of 1,000 brackets submitted.

After taxes, each of the 1,000 people would get half a million bucks.  Not bad.

Regarding Oregon, their offense is amazing. Moser has been pounding the glass, too, as of late. Very versatile player. Young and Calliste are incredible shooters and Calliste can take it to the tin, as well. Lloyd is decent at the point. Oregon defends the 3 well, too. Oregon doesn’t really have any weaknesses. They don’t have a classic banger, but Moser is definitely more than good enough to do damage down low.

Regarding Providence, Bryce Cotton is one of the toughest men God ever manufactured. A true scorer and facilitator. A veritable X-factor who can take over a game. A main reason Providence beat Creighton TWICE this year. They have two guys who crash the glass and major size in their front court. Only issue would really be their lack of depth. Providence is dead last in the country in bench minutes.

Regarding New Mexico, I know what you’re saying. "Dale, Dale…are you on the meth? You picked them to go to the Final Four last year and they lost to, wait for it. Wait for it. HAHVAHD!" No, I am not on the meth…as far as I know. Listen, New Mexico had the excellent inside/out combo last year and they still have it this year. Their two significant issues they had last year — that I idiotically ignored — were defending the 3 and hitting the offensive glass. They were outside the top 200 in the country in both these key stats and have improved a bit in defending the 3 and have improved substantially in offensive rebounding.

Can’t wait for Thursday and Friday! 1st round (or what these schmucks now call the 2nd round) is my favorite round.

I think a bracket buster might be the Kentucky/Kansas St vs Wichita State game. We don’t see many #1 seeds lose to the 8 or 9 seeds, but I think we see it this year.

LL, my bud, I mentioned in The Don’s thread that I had no doubt The Ville, Michigan State, and Arizona would advance to the Final Four, and that my only hang-up was in the South region.

I was choosing among Florida, UCLA, and New Mexico.

I can’t see UCLA getting past VCU to be honest. As electric as UCLA is at the point and on the wing, VCU is #1 at forcing turnovers and #10 at defending the 3. It’s a nightmare matchup for UCLA and I think VCU pulls this one out.

I’m literally filling out my bracket for the first time right now (Dale’s a perennial procrastinator!) and I will let you know who I have emerging from that region.

As I mentioned in another thread, New Mexico’s two main weaknesses from last year have been taken care of this season. I made a major mistake neglecting the fact that although New Mexico was a very good team last season, they sucked (outside the top 200 in the country!) in both defending the 3 and hitting the offensive glass. Both are a death sentence come Tourney Time. New Mexico has improved a bit in defending the 3 (169th) and they are significantly better when it comes to offensive rebounding (103rd). Williams is back at the point and Bairstow and Captain Kirk are a devastating combo down low, not to mention that both can stretch the floor, especially Kirk from 3.

Here’s the thing with this years ucla squad when it comes to breaking full court press, Anderson is 6-9 and will not force the issue dribbling. He will gladly pass over the d and allow the other wings to come get it. Ucla is legit,

I’ve got Florida from the South. Tough call. New Mexico is no guarantee to get past a Embiid-less Kansas so I’ve got to hedge my bets a bit.
