rhamnlacsonParticipantam i the only one who thinks perry jones should have just joined the draft last year?

JoeWolf1It’s a double edged sword. For his sake financially, yes, but if he couldn’t handle taking over and dominating for a very good Baylor team in the NCAA I wonder if he could have lived up to the pressure and expectations of being the #3 or #4 overall pick (where I thought he would go last year if he stuck it out).

rhamnlacsonParticipantcould he live up to his potential this year though?
0 - Posted on: Thu, 06/21/2012 - 3:22am #684997

JoeWolf1Maybe or maybe not, but being drafted in the 12-20 range you don’t have the lofty expectations and he has the potential to goto a playoff team where he could learn in a winning culture. It may be better for his development in the long run.
I don’t think Perry will be an All-Star someday, but I think he’s got the potential to be a very versitile player who can play 25-30 mpg starting or off the bench for a good team. I’ve been harsh on him, but I never thought he’d suck, just that people’s expectations were way too high.

rhamnlacsonParticipantbut if jones could live up to his hype(hypothetical question) can he be an allstar in the making and a perinial one if he could be agressive 3-4 yrs to come if he could have the right drive and feel for the game could he could display leadership on and off the court?

orangeshadow83ParticipantLike JoeWolf implied, if he came out last year he would have had that much more pressure on him being a top pick and most likely be labeled a bust at this point. Now he gets the chance to get better without everyone expecting him to be the next KG and for a kid like him I think it will be a huge burden off of his shoulders.
I do see him having allstar potential, but not a first option on his team. I think he can be an excellent second option for any team a couple years. He just doesn’t have the killer instinct that seperates good players from great players, but with his unique skill set he could def be an allstar.

rhamnlacsonParticipantexcept if he goes to charlotte he will be thier first option kidding jones should go to a playoff team with a good pass 1st pg and 1 agressive PF/C veteran that cpould teach perry jones a thing or two on agressiveness and being a team leader maybe boston if they resign KG or san antonio?

JoeWolf1That would probably be one of the more ideal spots for him, but I think he won’t last until 21. Dallas may try to roll the dice on him, due to his potential and the aging of their core players. I think that would be a good spot for him too.

r377ParticipantPerry would of got some GM fired last yr if they took him high in the draft….

220ParticipantIt’s just how things go. You have guys with immense physical skill who often don’t have the mental aspect down to be great. A lot of guys with the mental aspect down, but a bit lacking in physical ability. The guys who have great physical skill and are mentally tough are the all star/super star types. Hopefully for Perry Jones sake he can pull it all together, but even if he doesn’t get things together on the mental end he could still be a Lamar Odom type of guy (previous years not this year with the Mavs).
When the draft hits the mid teens of picks I fully expect someone to take a gamble on him.

PulseGlazerParticipantIf Perry got a GM fired last year, that team’s owner is a moron. He’s a really young player – no one would expect a star one year out. If he came out last year, I would have expected him to go #4 to Cleveland, a spot I wouldn’t be shocked to see him successful in long-term as a Deng type, if not the superstar many seem to expect.

For_Never_EverParticipantNo offense to the creator of the post, also the people in it. I’m so Effing sick of seeing a post titled Perry Jones it seems everyday.

Andrew1984ParticipantRight now, he’s so widely-considered overrated that he’s becoming underrated.

Meditated StatesParticipantHe is criticized not praised so I don’t see hype at all. He has been banged on so hard people are not seeing the skills that transfer to the L. I hope he goes to Boston but I say he is gone by then. He tested out as a much stronger guy than Randolph. His bench was higher than Drummonds. I though he bullied Davis in the second half of the KU vs Baylor game as well. He should be a solid pro maybe better or way better than that.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI think Perry Jones was a 8-20 pick last year. He is about the same this year. He has a great upside, let’s see if he uses it. But, you could say that about most players in this draft. How many finished products with upside (is that a paradox?) are there in this draft?
If a team drafts him one line of thinking is, yeah, he might be a little raw, but oversized small forwards are kind of like the "new thing" now. You might need a guy like LeBron, Durant, Carmelo, or even just a mid-range guy like Deng, Gay (Deng Gay is a fever isn’t it?), and Granger.
There are few guys with more "upside" than Perry Jones in this draft. For that reason alone he will be a top 15-20 pick. Plus, he had a solid year and showed some flashes (including the 2nd half of the Elite 8 game vs. Kentucky).
I think he is an intriguing player. You need "stars" in today’s league to compete especially under this new salary cap era where you are better off paying 3 guys big money, then a couple of mid-range guys and filler/role players off the bench. You need "stars" since you can’t really pay 7 or 8 above-average core types. So at some point if a young team wants to get to be a contender one day they might have to just take a flyer on an "upside" guy like Perry Jones.
I think he would be an interesting pick for the Blazers at 11. If they get Drummond at 6 then PJIII would give them two of the guys with the most "upside" in the draft. Then they could pair those guys with LMA and give them a tall, long, athletic front line. PJIII would also give them insurance in case Batum leaves. Or they could sign and trade Batum. Maybe for Deron Williams in some sort of package (possibly Raymond Felton and a future first rounder too).
Blazers:
Starters:
PG: Deron Williams
SG: Wes Mathews
SF: Perry Jones
PF: LaMarcus Aldridge
C: Andre Drummond
Bench:
PG: Nolan Smith
PG/SG: Elliott Williams
SG: Jon Diebler, if/when he comes over
SF/PF: Luke Babbitt
C/PF: Kurt Thomas
That is a young team with lots of potential to do some damage in the West. Basically a superstar in D-Will, a legit all-star in LMA, a good complementary guy in Wes Mathews plus two nice lotto picks in Drummond and Jones.
The Blazers also have picks 40 and 41. I think those could be packaged with Batum and others for D-Will in a big sign and trade. I think Batum, Felton, Jonny Flyn, picks 40 and 41, cash, and a future first rounder would be a solid trade.

JrbenzCuse23Memphis madness- traditionally trading stars for a bunch of pieces does not work out for the team trading the star. I guess if they have no chance in signing him and that is the best offer they can get. D Will would hve to agree to go to Portland too.

sheltwon3ParticipantRegardless of where Perry Jones gets drafted, I think his staying another year was the best thing he could have done. I think it allowed him to grow in areas that he would not have grown if he would have come out last year. If he falls, some team is going to get a steal.

benny15Participantpersonally, the team i want him to go to is at houston. the guy needs to develop his body first and foremost in order to withstand the pounding of the NBA game. with the rockets, he wont be asked to contribute right away since they have rotational players already. they have decent depth at 3 and 4 but at the same time, cant say they have clear cut stars in it right now. Patterson can be really good, as well as Budinger, but both havent shown the consistency to be the franchise’s main man. and most of all, he could learn from Kevin McHale.
same guy who helped mold KG and transition from a small forward when he entered the league, to the player we all know now. can he be McHales’s next Ndudi Ebi? of course. but at the same time, he already has the potential to be much better than him and will receive the same oppurtunity KG got to be as good as he is today. be taught to use his strengths as mismatch advantages and not be singular on his approach to all his opponents. but most of all, he’ll have the oppurtunity to develop his game at a team atmosphere and wont be asked to dominate since he has very good complementary players around him.

chocboywndrParticipantI personally would like him to be picked by the Raptors. I think Casey is a great coach for him and he would mesh well with the young guys on the team. I think Bargs and Jones would be iinterchangable up front and along with Val could give them a 7 foot frontline.
People are too hard on these guys sometimes. Its like if a guy doesn’t harness all his talent right away it like "he will never figure it out". The guy is 20 years old, I know more 20 year olds that need direction than guys who don’t. Who doesn’t know someone who bloomed a little later than expected or you had to work a little harder to get the maximum out of them. I think if he drops out of top 8 there will be a lot of GM’s answering questions about why they didn’t pick him in a couple years.
