Wichita (Kan.) Heights senior power forward Perry Ellis, who was named to USA TODAY’s high school basketball All-USA second team last season, said Wednesday he plans to sign with Kansas. He chose the Jayhawks over Wichita State, Kansas State and Kentucky. By Jeff Tuttle, AP The 6-8, 220-pound Ellis said Kansas was where he felt the most comfortable. "I love being around my family and Kansas was not too far and not too close," Ellis said. "I’m excited about my choice. You see what (Kansas Coach Bill Self) has done with his players, for example the twins (Marcus and Markieff Morris). You can see how he improved them." Self attended Ellis’ first high school game. "That was real important," Ellis said. "I thought (as a freshman) that I was pretty good, but that was pretty humbling. It was a good feeling to have him be there for my first game." Ellis is the top recruit that Kansas has landed in the 2012 class. He’s listed as the No. 33 player by Scout.com and No. 24 player by Rivals.com. "This is an important recruit for Kansas," Scout.com recruiting analyst Evan Daniels said. "They had Zach Peters (from Plano, Texas) already in the 2012 class, but they had missed on some big-time guys as of late. This is one they’ve been recruiting for a long time." Ellis led Wichita Heights to a third consecutive state title last season while averaging 22.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. "He’s a guy who’s really developed his low-post game as far as being a guy who can really score," Daniels said. "He’s a solid athlete who can run the floor well and has good hands. You can tell he works pretty hard on his game. He’s gotten better over the course of his career." Ellis’ sister, Savannah just finished her senior season at Memphis. While Ellis said Savannah helped keep him on track academically, he said Heights coach Joe Auer helped ease the recruiting process. "I really wanted to follow her footsteps," Ellis said. "I would also like to thank Coach Auer for making me a better person and player. A lot of players get really confused with the recruiting process and he kept that from happening."

So, a huge get for Kansas. Any thoughts on this? And do you guys think this affects the recruitment of Tarczewski in any way?

I love Perry’s game. This is a great pickup for Kansas. I’ve seen Perry play in person, and he destroyed my hometown teams. I was surprised that he picked Kansas though. Most of the local papers said that he would probably choose Wichita State. I guess he changed his mind, or the papers didnt know what they were talking about. All in all though, this is a great pickup for the Jayhawks.

Great pick up for you guess, ya’ll beat us for him fair and square. I think this helps with Tarczewsk because he will know he will have some help big time if he decides to go there. He will also have less comp for his position (battle with Grant Jarrett who is actually better than him at Arizona)

Kansas is back!! I love Perry’s game. He is a combo foward that can beat you on the perimeter or on the inside. I also liked the fact that he chose an in-state school, which saids alot about his character. He could’ve easily chosen Kentucky and be part of Coach Cal’s dream class, but he chose otherwise. Now when you pair him and the soon to be commitment of Kaleb Tarczewski. I would say that Kansas has one hell of a recruiting class.

I wanted him to come to KState. But I haven’t even seen him play, just know he’s an in-state recruit who was touted. Now the attention turns to Willie Cauley
