He was my favorite player growing up. He would have been a top 10 PG of all time. He was a nightmare for opposing PG, because not only could he beat you off the dribble, but his post up game was a weapon and was an underrated aspect in his game. But At the same time I don’t think he’s the type of player that could carry a whole franchise in his back and win a title. He was the closes thing to Magic Johnson, but he thrived better when there’s another go to player next to him. He was an unselfish player, he would have had no problem bringing in top free agents to play with him and win a title or two.

I would say his star level was at Brandon Roy’s, but Penny was way WAY more marketable because he was a unique player (a 6’7 PG), he sold shoes and gears like no one did (next to MJ).

Penny was a very well rounded player, his combo of height and passing ability allowed him to see the floor over anyone and he had a very good inside-outside game he could score from anywhere on the floor. He was a superstar in terms of popularity, however I think he was just a notch below a superstar in this league as he couldnt dominate a game and impose his will whenever he wanted. He was a very special player though and I wish his career wasnt cut short by injuries( I know he played several years after he we was injured, but he was no where near the same player and became a ballhog) I would have liked to have seen what he would have done.

penny was without question a superstar. And i doubt he would have played anymore pg had he stayed healthy. He openly said that he was done playing pg and wanted to play on the wing before the big injuries and i think that is where he would have thrived and probably been good for about 24ppg with about 5 boards and 5 assists. He would have been all nba 1st, 2nd or 3rd team for another half dozen seasons. His last healthy run was during the 1997 playoffs and he put up 31 points a game with just 3 assists over 5 games. It was clear the magic were leaning towards him being a full time wing.

I still have his jesrsey and it was the first i ever bought when he was a rookie.

Also my very first favorite player. Penny -Shaq was so fun to watch. The guy was more like a more marketable Joe Johnson IMO. Was definitely a second option, mostly because he had a true pg mindset. I sincerely wish he and Shaq would have gotten a title together. Saddens me. I really thought he and Kidd were gonna tear shit up in PHX but injuries stopped us from ever getting to see what could have been.

Side note,…lil Penny was one of the highlights of my mid 90’s.

hill wasnt as explosive an athlete as lebron and lebron is a better 3 point shooter. Hill was smooth and always had defenders on their heels. He was flirting with triple doubles regularly. His last healthy season was his last in detroit and he averaged 26ppg…7rebs…and 5assists. He would get the board and then push length the court himself. He didnt have much help in detroit but you always knew playing the pistons was gonna be a challenge cause of hill being able to do everything. NBA fans really lost out when hill went down with injuries.

im a true believer that the game evolves and that the basketball we see today is better then what we saw in the 90’s in terms of overall skill and depth of the league. But hill, malone, payton olajuwon and of course jordan would come in today and wouldnt miss a beat running things.

i wasnt watching until about 1991. But i have seen countless games from the 80’s on tape and read about the decade. Like i said earlier, i truly believe the game evolves. It makes no sense that with the game becoming international and the aau circuit growing and just natural evolution of the game that it would decline in skill. Pgs werent nearly as fast. Lots of bigs in the league were just stiffs. Sf’s played like pf’s posting up and not really able to shoot or dribble like most sf’s in todays game. Defenders used to back up off their man by a good 3-4 feet and since shooting wasnt as good they got away with it where today you give guys space and they will drain it on you.

^^^I’m with him. I only started watching in 92 when Shaq was drafted. I’ve seen plenty of film as well. Mostly of Showtime though. Some old badboy vids and such. The game was a lot more about size and skill instead of how athletic and fast u are. Shooting wasn’t neary as needed either as a large portion of the L couldn’t shoot a 3 ball very well. Back then all it took was to be big though and you could make it in the L. With less athletic players, you didn’t have to be extremely good at timing or have terrific defensive awarness or an incredible skill set/footwork. Though the IQ was higher then IMO as the bigs were far batter passers I think. IMO, the 80’s and early-mid 90’s were the best years for a basketball fan. These days are more for guys who just love excitement. During the 80’s watching guys like Drazen,Larry, and Lambier made the game fun. It was just like watching pickup ball with guy’s who were ultra skilled. Terrific. I suppose as I get older, and start playing with the highschool kids at the local ball court i find myself not being able to run as fast or jump as high as I could 6 years ago, and it’s making me become more of a student of the game. I find myself watching more times than not, players of the 80’s and early-mid 90’s more than anything. Along with Kobe these days. The lack of athletes also made you appreciate a guy like MJ or Kemp a WHOLE lot more.

Penny Hardaway was and is still one of my favorite players, and he was definitely a superstar, when healthy he was an amazing player, people forget he and Shaq went to the NBA Finals and Shaq was out played by Hakeem Olajuwon, but that was in like they’re 3rd and 2nd years in the league. They were so young and made it to the finals. Of course Jordan was retired but if Shaq doesn’t leave for LA, you may have a dynasty in the making, because Shaq only got better, and Penny could drop 30 points one game and 15 assists the next. Or he could just got at averages and get you 20 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a block, while shooting 50 %.  Minus the size difference, Dwayne Wade’s game reminds me exactly of penny’s. Of course people will say DWADE is a better scorer but Penny started getting injured his 4th year in the league so we don’t know how his stats would have looked without the injuries, that also halted his impovement, his years with amazing stats actually came before his prime. His points increased every year until the injuries. He was also a part of "Dream Team 2" in the 1996 olympics, including 17 points in the final game. Twice all NBA first team, 3 all star teams, and that was in his first 4 years, and he also had an all nba 3rd team in those 1st 4 years.

But 5 knee surgeries will definitely ruin a player, especially when he relies heavily on athletics, Penny was one of the quickest athletes the game has ever seen. (Side note, Brandon Roy’s game doesn’t rely heavily on athletics so I think he can still play, I hate when people say he’s done, and the blazers want him to retire, when they almost beat the NBA champions in the first round and in at least 2 games he was the only reason they won)

But Other things about Penny, he had lil penny played by Chris Rock, he drank sprite, he had classic shoes, some of the best of all time, that’s why people are buying them once again now in 2011, about 15 years later.

And he gave way to another number 1 in Orlando who was also injury riddled, Tracy Mcgrady, another one of my favorite players of all time.

I honestly think Penny s the reson I’m such a Kobe fan. I lost Penny to injuries and Bean was the most resembling to the cent. BTW,…I too still have my Penny jersey, though it was his Dream team 2 jersey. Shaq’s also!

Penny was a very good player, you saw his growth when he switched to his more natural two guard position. Grant Hill was probably a better pg than Penny even though he played sf. Penny was an elite talent. Grant Hill was the future of the league.

Penny was a great before the injury, if shaq never left orlando we would be talking about a hall of fame career because they would have won multiple rings there. He was def a top 5 player in his prime but then shaq left and he got hurt and he was never the same since.

     ^^^Not sure man.

Grant Hill wasn’t LBJ. LBJ is a forward who can pass like a pg but can’t control tempo the way a pg could. That was Hill. A TRUE point forward. A pg who was big enough to play the 3. He was truely the evolution. A lot of guys can hadle the ball and be the big playmaker, but this guy truely knew what he was doing. With a real team, there is no question he would have been a champ. Watchin him make his comeback after years of injuries was the greatest thing ever for me. Definitely an inspiration.

Penny was a superstar and would of been a Superstar if he never got hurt. Plus he had the 2nd best looking basketball shoes next to MJ. Anyone remember the little Penny Commercials??
