Apparently the Pelicans are going after Knicks Forward Chris Copeland.

This makes sense considering the only small forward they probably want (Porter) will be gone by 6. Copeland was somewhat under the radar on a loaded Knicks bench but I could see him being a decent stopgap starter. I would expect NO to go PG with the 6th pick and probably bring in Burke which a slight chance of MCW. The only other scenario I could see if taking a center but only if Len somehow falls that low.

Is Copeland a sf or a pf? On offense he can play both as a strecth or just stand in the corner guy but can he guard either position? He played 87 minutes the last two regular season games and combined for an incredible 65 points but only 10 boards. Spreading the floor is important so if you can have guys who can do that on offense as long as they are diverse in their other skills they should fit well together.

Reminds me a bit of Tobias Harris in the sense that he’s a good scorer and has the body to play SF or PF, but just can’t defend at all. Well can’t judge how rookies play defense in the NBA. Sophmore and Junior year they make a leap and improve greatly. Copeland is foul prone and has trouble moving laterally on defense, which can be worked on. But what makes Copeland special is his offense.

He had a tremendous debut to the NBA. For Copeland’s first season, he averaged over 20 ppg per 36 minutes. He shot 48% and 42% from 3pt land. He can drive, slash and cut to the basket. His shooting improved every month. He can only get better each season since he’s getting familiar with the NBA style and gaining more confidence in his game every month. He’ll be a better scoring coming into the 13-14 season.

Who ever will get Copeland should be very happy. I’m a Knicks fan and I hope they keep him. He’s a great character and teammate. He always tries his best on the floor and gives you what he can…you can’t be mad at that, especially since this guy went undrafted.

I like Copeland more than JR Smith because Copeland has excellent shot selection. Copeland just needs to work on his defense and passing. He was a great insurance back up when Melo was hurt. He’ll keep the Pelicans in many ways since they need scoring.
