Which duo do you think is the better one?

Also, which would be more exciting to watch?

I’m old school as well. Very close comparison. To this point the Sonics had more playoff success. For some reason Clippers always seem to have trouble in the playoffs.

I liked the defense of Payton/Kemp. Plus I had the original Reebok Kamikazes when I was in 8th grade. Lookem up.

lol that’s so funny! my best friend had the same shoes in the 8th grade, he wore garbage bags over them when he had to walk to school in the snow. I was more of a fan of barkleys air max at the time

I was all about the Nike Glove, with that leather flap that covered the laces! Kamikazes were sweet though!

Real close and I think the lack of success the clippers are having compared to what the sonics did is mostly about how tough the west is today. Keep in mind the sonics lost in the first round a few times with Payton/kemp when they were the higher seeded team including to my lakers in ’95. With all that said, I think it’s a draw. Payton was better then cp3 but griffin is better then kemp. As for excitement, definitely Payton kemp combo.

I think both duos were exciting to watch, but I would take The Glove and Reign Man on excitement. I think CP3 and Blake Griffin will end up being the better duo though when it is all said and done with.

CP3 and Grifin for me.  Kemp is a bit overrated to me.  Yeah he was exciting but offensively he was pretty much just an uber athletic finisher.  His defense wasn’t anything special.  His IQ was below average lacked discipline and often found himself in foul trouble.  Griffin has more variety in his game with his better handle and passing abilty. He’s not just a finisher.  You can actually run offense through him.  Combine that with CP3s better ability to stretch the floor and I’ll take the modern duo.

You obviously have never watched Kemp in his prime. He was a load to deal with in the post, and was also able to knock down 18 foot jumpers. He was also an underrated passer, and was excellent at kicking it out on double teams to pass it for open 3 pounts to Hersey Hawkins, Nate McMillan, and Detlef. Just watch the NBA Finals series Sonics vs Bulls, and how he abused Dennis Rodman.

Typical, lame assumption.  As if that somehow invalidates a post.  I’m a Bulls’ fan who happened to watch every single one of their championship runs and that Sonics team was one of my favorites to watch out of those WC teams.  Their style was unique with those junk defenses, converting defense to offense, inverted offense with GP (and at times Detlef) in the post and they had that entertainment factor.  But real recongize real, Kemp wasn’t a load to deal with in the post.  1 on 1 he was more of a face up blow by guy (who lifted his pivot just about every single time he advanced) with a below average to average jumper. He was more of a transition scorer, PnR, dump off, bully ball, o-board finisher.  He was far less effective just giving him the ball and letting him go to work.  In fact, if Kemp was a bigger threat as a post scorer/player who knew how to take advantage of doubles, they would not have had their long bouts of struggling to score in the half court, which ultimately became their undoing in the playoffs.  Griffin right now is better offensively than Kemp ever was.  There isn’t a better passing/playmaking PF in the game.  And no, Kemp wasn’t an underrated passer.  He didn’t even warrant that many doubles.  So even if you think Kemp was an underrated passer, which I don’t agree,  he doesn’t touch Griffin’s ability.  Then there’s shooting and ball-handling…

That playoff run with the Sonics when they went to the finals, Kemp arguably was playing better than any PF during that play off run. He put up 22/13 vs Olajuwon and Horry, then 22/9 vs Karl Malone and 22/10 vs Dennis Rodman. Those are some of the best defensive front court anyone can face and he did it not just by running up and down the floor and dunking.

Here is Kemp showing the whole repitoire of his offense. Range, Post game, passing, face up offense, against a championship team. https://youtu.be/tJCR4YOoEWY

I remember Kemp vividly.  The right shoulder baseline spin (where he chicken winged and hooked a lot), scissor kick jumpers for no reasons. face up blow-by’s (where he picked up his pivot foot) etc.  Kemp only averaged 20+ points a game once in his career and that was after his Sonics days when he was coked up on those crappy Cavs teams.

At no point was he better offensively than Griffin is now. The pure volume scoring, the ability to have an offense ran through him as a hub, the variety, the passing, handling, mid range shooting ALL favor griffin. Again, if Kemp was as good and versatile of a scorer/playmaker in the post, the Sonics would not have struggled to score in the half-court like they did.

Payton-Kemp were a better fit than CP3-Blake.  Blake needs a more up-tempo point guard.

I’m going cp and Blake. Payton, while a phenomenal defender and possibly better scorer than cp3, was not the playmaker cp is. Griffin has a more versatile offensive skill set than Kemp ever had. Better shooter, ball-handler and passer, and just generally a better overall feel for the game.

People talk about the lack of playoff success for the clippers, but seem to forget that those 90s sonics teams were also famous for flaming out in the playoffs. In 94 they had the best record in the league and lost to Denver in the first round. The following year they won 57 games but lost to the Lakers in the first round. Except for the 96 season, they never really lived up to expectations.

Payton was also a huge, huge trash talker and Kemp had an army of children. So for on and off court entertainment, I’ll go with Payton/Kemp. And those guys still hang out.
