Paul Pierce has decided to opt out of his current contract with the Celts. This via: Marc Stein twitter.

A little surprised, but I guess he thinks he can get one last big contract. Clippers?

Hes definitely trying to get some big dollars, its pretty smart too…

Knowing that so many teams have cleared all that capspace, and not every team is gonna come out FA winners, hes in hopes that one team will reach out to him with a contract that he likely doesnt “deserve” and cash-in big time

Damn. The sight of a player starting and finishing his career with one team is becoming so rare.

I remember seeing him opt out MONTHS ago. I even made a post about it in like April.

I’m not. He wants some money and longer years.

i think its dumb, i dont think any team is dumb enough(i hope) to sign him long term big money. he was gonna get like, just guessing 18 mil this year, and i dont think he gets offers more than 3 years 33mil because he is old.

It’s because the 2011 market isin’t looking too good.

He could 11 mill this offseason or 8 next season…smarter he opted out

Its not really news that he opted out, it was known he was going to do it for some time. You guys are insane if you don’t think he’s going to end up anywhere besides Boston. Guy will retire in green and white.

lol Kevin Garnett should just retire as well. With Sheed, Garnett, Allen and Pierce off the books Boston should be able to afford Lebron, Dirk and McGrady under the cap.

Then they can get their new big 3 that championship they all need for their “legacy”

Pierce’s option was the same as Dirk’s… 21.5 mil.

What if PIerce is opting out to take less money? That way Boston can sign better players? Can’t this be a reason why he’s opting out? He knows that they need better players if he wants another title. By they way I don’t want Boston to win another one, they were handed a championship 3 years ago.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Pierce ends up in L.A. They have money to spend, he’s from there and at this moment I’m not sure they are getting anyone else, but we will see. It’s a smart move by Pierce even if he stays, because he is going to get paid under the current collective bargaining agreement and secure a long-term deal. I think under normal circumstances he would stay with the Celtics, but Garnett is aging fast and Ray, Rasheed and Doc are likely all gone.

As far as money goes if Ben Gordon can get 10-11 million a year, I see no reason why Pierce can’t get the max or close to it even for 2-3 years. Right now a lot of teams have money to spend, so someone is going to pay him. I think he has at least two good years because he plays smart and his game wasn’t based solely on athleticism like a guy like Shawn Marion who is in free fall right now because he has no real skills.

About 7 or 8 years ago I think i was the only person that thought Antoine Walker was a better player then Pierce..LoL…Pierce made 21 mill this season…It’s hard to imagine the Celtics paying him 21 million dollars..Not many people expect him to go anywhere..But if he wants to remain a Celtic..He’s going to have to take a slight paycut..Unless they fill his contract with special incentitives…1 player that should’ve not opted out is Richard Jefferson..He had a poor year with the Spurs…He didnt fit in with them at all…..I bet they’re licking their chops….
