I know it’s early in the season, but Pau Gasol is playing out of his mind right now! I’m not a Laker fan by any means, but it’s obvious who is the best team in the league at this moment. If the Lakers have the best record by the time the playoffs start and Gasol is still putting up these numbers, do you think he should get MVP consideration? I know he won’t win with Kobe on the same team and his stats will probably go down when Bynum returns, but do you think he should get some consideration?

Good point. It will probably happen so that the media can once again undermine Kobe. But nonetheless I think Pau is undeniably the best PF in the game so it’s not a far fetch. The Lakers have a dynasty setup like I have never seen.

Gasol is the best player on that team,

I thought he should have been in the discussion the last 2 years!

Gasol is the Lakers second option and second best player, normally the MVP award goes to the best player on the team which in this case is Kobe, when Bynum gets back Gasol will still be productive but will get less touches, lowering his chances at a very considerable rate. This isn’t me saying Gasol is not a good player because I think he is a great player but with Kobe on the same team as him it would be hard to say he would beat him out for it.

The best scorer on a team is not always the best player. Steve Nash for example has been the best player on the Suns since arriving there even though he has never lead the team in scoring. Kobe is a great scorer and a good player, but I believe over all when you look at all aspects of the game Gasol is the better player. People put too much empisis on the number of points someone scores and misses the big picture of what that player means to there team. If the best player was always the best scorer then the scoring champ would always be the mvp.

Interesting point that I can agree with to a certain extent, let me put it this way, Gasol is a great player but without Kobe I am sure you would see his productivity and efficiency decrease. Kobe allows Gasol to not get double teamed because if Kobe’s man goes in to double Gasol in the post, Gasol can dish out to Kobe for a jumpshot and because defenders do not want to give Kobe that shot or enough space to create for himself or another teammate they stay home on Kobe and allow Gasol to work on his man in the post and break him down one on one. Kobe makes Gasol a better player and more efficient because Kobe takes the pressure off Gasol and allows him to be a second option where he thrives, Gasol would be a solid first option but is a great second option and compliments Kobe very well. Kobe is by far the best player on the Lakers team, not only does he score but his leadership and mentality is what allows that team to be so successful, sure Gasol averages a double double but Kobe’s value to that team is much more then Gasols. You could argue that before Gasol, the Lakers were struggling but the same argument could be made vice versa, without Kobe would the Lakers be any more then just a solid team? Gasol is a great player, Kobe is just better though.

I was thinking about this myself, but I thought I’d get a tonne of minusus for bringing it up.

It could be argued that if you put any good player with any other good player then odds are both would see an increase in success. What we need is for one to go out for 10 games or so then have hime come back and have the other go out for the same amount of time and against the same level of compition then we could compare the records of the team over each stretch. Not likly to happen. At least we can agreed that the lakers are a beast of a team.

if you’re asking who has been better through 4 games and is gasol a legit mvp candidate, yes its gasol with the slight edge after 4 games. But that has as much to do with kobe resting and picking his spots while gasol is playing like hes on a mission. But KObe has always been the better player and as the season wears on that will become obvious once again.

Neither will win MVP, Kobe will take enough votes away from Gasol and Gasol some from Kobe.

Best PF and best SG or close it, they’d have to be really dominant to win it this year.

When Kobe and Shaq played together their was only 1 MVP won between them in 8 years.
