IndianaBasketballParticipantNothing against McMillian, but Larry Bird is nuts lol. Says he wants to score more points, but then hires a guy who’s offense is slower and worse than Vogel’s. I don’t get it.

SeattleSuperChronicsParticipantI’m assuming you are talking about his pace of play while he was in Portland. Hard to knock that when you had Greg Oden Joel Przybilla and lamarcus Aldridge on the same sqaud with Brandon Roy being the primary ball handler. (Even if Greg barely played, they were committed to a style that would fit him for those years)
I’m a huge Nate McMillan fan. I think it’s a great hire. Surprised he didn’t get a job sooner.

mcbaileyParticipantHis Seattle teams were similar, though. He has roughly 12 years of trotting teams out with the same style. It’s hard to blame that on one particular roster.
One thing in his favor is that he gets pretty decent offensive efficiency out of his teams (for the most part), but that’s not the same thing as up-tempo offense. In fact, it often means the opposite, but I digress. I guess what makes this truly puzzling for me is that for someone who complained about Vogel "losing his locker room," (which I’m calling BS on, btw) Bird hired someone who was accused of losing his locker room in Portland upon his firing.
This isn’t to say that Nate McMillan is a bad coach, because I don’t think that’s the case. I’d have been okay if Bird hadn’t laid out a dozen ways to justify his decision to let Frank Vogel go, and then picked someone who doesn’t fit that vision even a little bit.

mcbaileyParticipantThis is a bad meme waiting to happen. Wants to score more points/hires another defensive-minded coach. Wants a new voice for the team/promotes someone who’s been there for four years. This is at best a lateral move, though in my opinion, it’s a step backward.
If nothing else, this hire proves that Larry Bird does not care about two things:
1) What anyone thinks.
2) Winning games at the expense of his ego.

HitsterParticipantDon’t forget Kevin Pritchard is Pacers GM, him and Nate worked together at Portland also so I’d guess Kevin would be pushing for Nate to get the Pacers job.
Nate is a strong disciplinarian and is very much into the good character type players that Pritchard, Bird and Donnie Walsh also like so it seems a logical match.
