Appears to be a straight up trade Chase Budinger for Damjan Rudez. Both players only signed for this year, Buds $5million salary for Rudez’s $1.1million.
It won’t move the needle very much, but I like this trade for the Pacers if Bud can stay healthy, even though they really need frontcourt help.

Maybe somebody can explain it to me, but I don’t get it… This is the first move Larry Bird has made this summer that I don’t get.

I mean, does Bird think he’s getting the Rockets version of Chase Budinger? Due to knee injuries, he’s not the same athlete. Budinger is the more versatile player for sure, but Rudez shot 40% from three-point last season and at 6′ 10", can play both the three or the stretch four.

I don’t know… I don’t get it. I feel like the Pacers are paying almost $4 million more for basically a lateral move.

This is basically a salary and minutes dump by the timberwolves. Rudez shouldn’t require many minutes and also spaces the floor for their young players which should help them. There weren’t going to enough minutes to go around on the wing for the timberwolves. They still have martin, lavine, wiggins and muhammed, bjelica could get some minutes at the three as well. As a twolves fan I like this trade.

Financially, some teams want to move out money while others think more money on ending deals could be useful, for trades later in the season.

More likely, the Pacers are just spending a bit more to have a player with more experience on the roster.

Another idea, for their listed weights Budinger is heavier.  He isn’t a big, strong player but maybe if M Turner and P George are up front too Budinger is a better fit.  At his best, Budinger was probably more athletic.  That was a few seasons ago.

Another possible reason, the T-Wolves wanted a player to waive as they want to sign Nemanja Bjelica.  Instead of waiving someone like Budinger to clear a roster spot, they traded him for a cheaper player.  Bird and the Pacers were happy to get a useful player, and maybe in the future Minnesota would help them out in a deal.

I will guess that Budinger with more NBA experience was what the Pacers wanted, while Minnesota wanted to clear money and playing time.

I’ve heard that this was clearly a Pacers move, who called about Budinger. There’s a possibility Minny won’t even keep Damjan Rudez(who could be,you know, picked up by the Spurs who would turn him into a decent NBA role player because that’s how the NBA works)
