He looks absolutely terrible right now against Louisville. I had so many hopes for him ever since his freshmen year. Then I thought maybe that next year would be his breakout year, didn’t look improved at all as a sophomore, only got more minutes. Then I thought maybe this year could finally be his year. He so far has two 20 point games so far this year against Oakland and Belmont but that is nothing compared when they start ACC competition. First of all, he plays too soft in the post. May be a little undersized for a PF but he doen’t back down his defenders nor does he try harder attacking the post. I’d hate to say this, but I can never see McAdoo contributing at the NBA level. His outside game is too average and if he plays too soft in the post at college level competition, there is no way he could play better down low in the post at the NBA level. I was very excited to watch James McAdoo when he first came out of high school but he never went anywhere near his expectations. Will he ever pick up his game?

I go to school at UNC, and I keep telling people that McAdoo is overrated and they laugh me off. He reminds me exactly of a poor man’s Derrick Williams. I think he has potential to be in an NBA rotation, just not as a starter.

I don’t even know what niche he’d have as an NBA player. He isn’t particularly good at anything. Well, I guess he moves his feet pretty well on defense.  That’s about it.

One reason why he got all of that exposure in high school was because he didn’t play at a very high level of competition compared to Oak Hill Academy, Huntington Prep or Findlay Prep. Although I remember how good I thought he looked for the Team USA U17 team where he was named to the All-Tourney Team along with Bradley Beal.

Offensively he really has no identity.  He obviously can’t post and his face up game is awkward because he still can’t shoot, he’s stiff, his ball skills are still weak and he has poor instincts as far as when to shoot the ball.  He still takes those weird, drifting shots on the move that have very little chance of going in.

He looks like an energy guy at the next level, yet his energy level is not consistent. Maybe he can be a PF defensive specialist off the bench since he does move his feet well for a PF.

      Well said.

It seems that McAdoo suffers from Perry Jones Syndrome (an athletic SF/PF tweener without a developed skillset at either position).

he is a no role player at next level… he is neither a SF nor a PF. His shot is inconsistent and he has poor skill under the glass. Good athlete but i agree he could be only a rotation player in a good team (or a starter in a tanking one, of course).

Mcadoo doesn’t bring much to the table other then looking the part. His Freshman year he was intriguing due to having nice pieces around him and he blended in and gave us glimpes of his potential. Also as a freshman you still have that "potential" label. Now as a Junior that label is gone. I really don’t know what to make of his game. I’m not sure if he can crack the first round in the upcoming draft if he doesn’t pick it up soon.

On another note: Marcus Paige is balling his *** off. Also I really like Kennedy Meeks. He may be heavy and he may not have a lot of lift but the kid knows how to play. Great hands, Great touch, good size and great understaind of how to play. Guy has about 4 outlet passes that were right on the money.

Joel James and Brice Johnson are both good looking NBA prospects. If Paige develops further, he could be a bench guy. Of course, Hairston, but he’ll prolly be red-flagged for character issues, and who knows what that’ll do to his stock

I think Paige could be a starter. He’s smart, plays at a great pace and he can shoot it. Playing at pace is ultra important for running PnR in the pro game and Paige has that.  He’s not as quick as a Brandon Jennings, but if Jennings had a brain he’d play more like Paige. Offensively he has the potential, defensively is where he could have an issue since he’s slight and not ultra quick.

McAdoo OTOH, I haven’t seen anything from him to suggest that he’s a future starter, whether he’s on a good or bad team.  His rate of improvement is shockingly slow.  Since his freshman yr how has he gotten better?

its early in the season and I think its important not to assess every thing in one game.  McAdoo has improved a little bit, he just didnt have a great game today.  before this game he was shooting a lil better and rebounding a lil better.  still, its not much evidence of offseason work.  he still looks like the same player for the most part but I would give him a few more games to see at least if he can step up his intensity.

I know people are gonna say…."well PJ and Leslie are out" and site that as the reason why Paige has had to step up his scoring.  that would be true, however, Paige shot a lot of shots last year and didnt get his teammates as involved as he should.  I dont blame him though, it was Roy and his style of play.  Paige is a good shooter, I just want to see his PG skills progress.

Joel James has to just learn how to use his size to his advantage.  When I see him shooting fade aways…I want to throw the remote at the TV.

Why is MacAdoo still projected 14 in this loaded draft?  He will be lucky to go end of the first round.

he’s projected that high because as I said, he had a good start to the season.  he didnt look good against Louisville, a step up in competition but his team still won so it doesnt look as bad because he wasnt forced to carry them.  as they face top opposition this year, if he is inconsistent, trust me, he will drop fast.

I dont like the Perry Jones comparison.  Jones is not a tweener because he has the physical tools and ball skills to play multiple position.  I think the term tweener is overused but if there is someone it applies to its certainly McAdoo.   He just doesnt do anything special to make him stand out.  My problem with him is, coming out of HS he KNEW he didnt have a back to the basket game and also knew he had to work on his jumpshot.  3 years later and he looks almost the same.

McAdoo’s not a tweener because he has absolutely no shot at playing SF. He’s an unskilled, athletic PF.

McAdoo just isn’t very great at much…He scores a lot of his baskets on wildly contested crazy shots that have no merit being taken
