TyroberParticipantEveryone will continue to talk about it but it makes zero sense for OKC to offer him the max deal. ZERO. Even if they are willing to and I am quite sure they are will, but they won’t be offering it. Offering him a max deal will be for 5 years and 7.5% raises each year when they can tell him to sign with another team which will be for 4 years and 4.5% raises. We already know that OKC will be a tax team and every deal and every dollar will matter and by letting Harden enter restricted free agency OKC will save themselves a few million.
end rant

Charlie SheenParticipantYes but he’s saying the max they can offer and they max they can match is different
so if he signs with Phoenix they match and save some money rather than just maxing him out off rip

theballerwayParticipantWhich teams would have a hole at the 2guard and enough cap room tho is a better question?
Orlando comes to mind first

phila9012ParticipantI dont think they will have that much cap room next summer, in 2014 is when they get a decent amount of cap room.

fastdanParticipantSomeone mentioned a team can offer a poison pill contract. However with ones we saw with Lin and Asik, as they won’t make the kind of money Harden would in his first two years.
I’m not sure of the rules on this but it doesn’t sound likely that a team can, but would a team be able to offer a massive frontloaded max contract? 20-25mil in the first year then like 8-10 the following years? It sounds unrealistic that the league would allow that, but it’s just that I’ve heard people talking about a poison pill contract. does anyone know the rules?
I can’t see OKC offering him more per year then another team could, so that works out to be 14-15 a year, but I could see them offering him a fifth year at the same yearly rate. I think if they decide they can’t afford to keep him, they WILL sign him to a contract and trade him at the deadline, or at the draft. He’ll have more value with a player with a contract already in place, and why not get another year out of him while he’s still on his rookie deal? It makes absolutely no sense that they would let him walk, and sign and trades for free agents never seem to get good value (ie, Miami giving a couple late first rounders for Lebron, not exatly what he was worth).

HaleParticipantAssuming this is true, good for them.
