I guess I am posting this about STEPHEN A SMITH because I heard he once was a "poster" on this fourm.  Wheter thats true or not, I don’t know, but I alays liked his basketball analysis and then he sorta disapeared these past couple years.

Anyways…He was co-hosting Espn show Mike & Mike in the Morning with Mike Greenburg and the way he was expressing himself and his knowledge of the in particular topic was really captavating 2 say the least.

The topic was why Donavan McNabb never defends himself after taking sooooo much criticism (especially about being a black QB) throughout his career (right or wrong) and why some people (mainly in the black community) get upset sometimes because they feel he is not just representing himself, but the black community as a whole and he needs to take a stand once in a while and defend himself.

I am not African American…I am white..albeit it my GF says I look puerto rican…lol…anyways…I am not doing the conversation justice at all, but Stepen A Smith was killing it….I find myself getting upset at McNabb sometimes also because while he def is in the downward stages of his career, he has thrown for over 35,000 yards, been to 4 NFC championships, 1 super bowl, #1 draft pick, o ya, and hes made over 100 mil in his career… he flat out has been disrespected waaay too much for what he has done throughout his career and while taking the "high road" and not feeding into the BS is honorable, it wouldnt hurt to grow a backbone every once and a while and defend yourself.

Anyways….Just wanted to give Stepen A Smith some props since he might possibly be an alumni of NBA DRAFT. NET.

For what?  To be seen as a hated athlete like LeBron?  There’s no need for him to justify himself.

Like they say on the court…

    Let your game speak.

Mcnabb drafted #1 overall…booed HORRIBLY by Phily fans…never said anything.

Rush L…basically calling him a "dumb black QB" made national headlines…never said anything

Philly reportes constantly talking ish in newspapers about his "lack of game" despite his stats….never said anything

Terell Owens publically calling him out and questioning his man hood….never said anything

Redskins caoch Mike Shanahan publically saying he is "not smart" enough to run the team as well as other stuff..never said anything

There are many more, these are just a couple notable instances

I am not saying he needs to defend himself everytime someone says something outlandish…but…He has had a good career and it wouldnt hurt to let your critics know you have been a good QB…the thing is…and Stephen A Smith touched on it….McNabb is a "corporate" guy and doesnt want to mess up the $$$$$….which is respectable…but….you can see why some people might want him 2 speak his mind every once and a while…instead of worrying about his bank account (which is more than large)

Have you ever heard someone say that whatever was said was so pointless that it doesn’t even deserve a response? I applaud his decision to not say anything. For Stephan A Smith to say that he represents the black community is just silly. Yes, McNabb is African-American and I know that there are young kids that look up to him. I think that McNabb has handled things perfectly.

Yeah McNabb isn’t wrong for how he’s handled things. People try to "b1tch" him all the time, some athlete basically called him a punk because of how he’s handled things. I wanna say Bernard Hopkins, but I can’t call it right now. Anyway, Donovan McNabb doesn’t need to say anything. For what? What would it prove? That’s how you can tell men from boys to me. I don’t understand at all why he would need to say anything to everyone that has called him out in front of the media. This isn’t middle school where you have to have "roasting sessions" when somebody talks about you so you prove something to people. The football field is where he proves himself. He’s been a winner, and he has a legacy. Albeit, some of his legacy is for him not winning a Super Bowl, but still he’s been a great QB. To me, it just makes everyone who’s criticizing him look silly. I think it’s lame for guys to take personal shots at him, but he doesn’t need to respond. He’d be a grown man playing a childs game if he did honestly.

I agree….but when is enough enough????….in my opinion you got to draw a line in the sand somewhere…thats just me however….I like McNabb and I really like the fact that he doesnt feed into the BS….but…sometimes I wish he would give an honest opinion…espiecally about the whole "black QB" issue thing….like I said I am not African American…but if I was, it would bother me that "black" QB’s  are considered less smart for some reason than your "white" QB…and the fact that Rush Limbaugh publically called McNabb just another "dumb black QB" and he didn’t even try to defend his "race" would not sit well with me.

People with "public voices" don’t need to address certain "hot topics" like race in sports.  They however arn’t always speaking for themselves…but people from their community, race, etc etc…that might not have voices to be heard.

I understand why someone would not feed into "political issues" or "race" issues in sports.  Besides taking the high road, it definitely could effect certain advertising deals that an athlete could recieve. $$$$$$

The great Michael Jordan said it best when he was asked why he didn’t publically support a Democrat( fogot his name) that was running against Republican Jesse Helms (a known racist and biggot at the time) in his home state of North Carolina.

    JORDAN…."Because Republicans buy Nikes also"

You nailed it right on the head. That was one of the greatest responses I’ve seen on the forum. Seperates the men from the boys. Summed it up right in that sentence. I’m not a big McNabb fan, but I think it is nothing short of admirable to be able to keep your head cool despite the things everybody is saying about you. Shows a true professional. Yeah, people might say stuff about you, but that is the role you are taking when signing your multi-million dollar NFL contract. Just brush it off and let it pass. Quite noble has McNabb been handling all this controversy.

After Tim Couch, who did all but nothing during his NFL career. Akili Smith was the pick right afterwards, than Edgerrin James, than Ricky Williams. Really, when you look at that top 5, Donovan is in a class by himself. They booed him because they wanted Ricky, they probably would have booed Akili Smith as well. But, I do not mind at all the way Donovan McNabb has handled himself, he is not a snake and he has not made comments after the fact, like a lot of other people do who end up sounding bitter and ridiculous. He is taking the higher road, and I am sure he has his thoughts and opinions on the matter, but he does not need to air it out in the media and the public. After all, when players do that, they are again criticized of the way they handled the situation.

I have always taken what Stephen A. said with a very small grain of salt. He was a talking head and I feel like his head got incredibly large. He took pride in being "Screamin’ A. Smith", but the problem was, when you scream about everyone being idiots, than you turn out to be wrong, than people tend not to forget. Remember when he went insane after the Trail Blazers made their draft trades in 2006? "How could they trade Tyrus Thomas and Randy Foye for LaMarcus Aldridge and Brandon Roy". In particular Stephen A. fashion, he went insane, said he "was not talking about the Blazers any more" pronounced every syllable in "Slava Medvedenko". To me, Stephen A. talking about McNabb not standing up for the black community, though I am sure he was passionate, is more self serving than anything. He wishes Donovan would say something controversial so he could continue running stories about him.

Well, never really liked Stephen A, glad I do not hear him very much. He is slightly above Skip Bayless, and both of them to me have opinions I usually do not care much about hearing. The funniest thing involving Stephen A. has to do with his steady demotion during draft coverage following his 2006 blow up and cheese doodles:

Quite frankly, I am glad I have seen less and less Stephen A. Smith over the years.

I agree stephen can go on a tangent…be that as it may…his arguement, if (you saw it) was spot on.

Just goes to show you that "even a broken clock tells the right time atleast twice a day"
