ESPN OTL was discussing how the NCAA mishandles investigations and they said the mishandling of the Miami investigation was the worst to date. Can someone explain to me what the NCAA did? I googled it and everything, I’m still not understanding. Help much appreciated, thanks.

Someone at the NCAA paid the lawyer of Nevin Shapiro (I think that was his name), for his information. So basically the NCAA paid a convicted fraudster for information, that they then wanted to use for evidence. It’s so silly it’s comical really

A 18 yr old kid who’s family lives below the poverty line is given $500 is considered an ‘Impermissible Benefit’. But the NCAA giving Shapiro’s lawyer for $20,000 is ok? How can you even trust that kind of information if a bribe was involved? He could easily be exaggerating.

I don’t trust the information and don’t particularly care about Miami or scum like Shapiro. I don’t mind the players getting some money, but if you read the details of the case this was more than $500, these players were getting hookers, boat parties, jewellery etc, some of the stuff people like Jon Beason got was unbelievable, you can see why the U got so many stud recruits. It actually wouldn’t surprise me if these sanctions are some of the worst since SMU, I think maybe 5 year bowl ban or something like that and big scholarship reductions.

Oh yeah for sure. When I said $500, I was speaking about any player in general terms… not those on said Miami team.

The NCAA should give the players a stipend, it’s hard to work when your sport takes up 90% of your free time. They bring in WAY too much money each year to not give the players a piece of the pie. I read that the players could seek legal action and get a piece of the tv contracts if they want to
