UNCbasketballbumParticipantlooks like they are finalizing a four team playof format for the 2014 season. All fans of college football have to be relieved since they can now have the championship settled on the field instead of in the computers. What do you guys think?

frogmanParticipantIf this is true.. Thank God.
I always thought an 8 team playoff would be perfect. This way Big teams with 1 or 2 losses could make it as well as a couple of mid majors if they went undefeated. Boise State and TCU have wanted this for the last 5 years.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantThis would be fantastic for the sport. Not to mention, there will be a lot more revenue, which is what the NCAA wants to hear.
Surprised it took this long, though.

ChewyParticipant8 team playoff sounds perfect. But I am more than happy to switch to a 4 team playoff to start. Do you know if they will still have all 80,000 smaller bowl games outside of the 4 tem playoff?

SubZeroParticipantI honestly don’t understand how or why the people in charge of things like this never hear what their fans say, or seem to not hear. Most everybody has been saying for years that a playoff format would be much better, especially after the season with Texas beating OU, OU beating Texas Tech, and Texas Tech beating Texas, and this past season with Alabama and LSU being in the same conference and playing in the championship. The only people who support the BCS are the traditionalists, and they’re not the ones who will help move the sport of college football forward.

GrandmamaParticipantI find it funny how there is a forum labeled "Off Topic" yet people constantly post threads in the NBA Draft forum entitled "Off Topic _______". Happy as hell though that they’re going to a playoff, long overdue.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThis sounds good, but what if it turns into 2 SEC teams along with Ohio State and Texas every year?
My idea would be to have 8 teams which would include all the great teams. I would them basically play an Elite 8 during New Year’s with 4 of the big BCS bowls hosting those 4 games. I think it would be a lot of fun, basically like March Madness and ratings would be huge. They could have one game at the Rose Bowl, another in Arizona with the other two out East being in New Orleans and Miami.
Then two weeks later I would have the final four in another town. Play one game Monday night with the other game the next night or even a double header. Then the championship game would be the next week. Just think of a college football final four in someplace like New Orleans,
Miami, San Diego, Phoenix, Dallas, Atlanta, Tampa, San Antonio, or Houston. They could do the Final Four games a few days after the AFC/NFC title games with the National Title Game the week before the Super Bowl.I am debating whether or not to only include teams that won their conference tournaments. I think that would be fair, more or less. That way a team that won a mid-level conference title would be in the debate. I guess it would harm some of the top teams that had a great season but may have lost the conference title game to another top team. So maybe they could limit the 8 team playoffs to a maximum of two teams from the same conference. So the SEC could only have 2 teams max, and not 4 or 5 teams.
I would seed the teams 1-8 with the top four teams going to a game closest to home (or the top teams pick where they want to go). I would limit the top 4 teams to teams that won their conference tournaments. The fifth and sixth seeded teams would also be teams who won their confernce but who don’t get preferential treatment as to where they play their playoff game. Then the last two teams would basically be the other top teams in the country. I would have two wildcard teams who didn’t win their conference championship games but still had great seasons with the other two teams also being conference champs but maybe of lesser conferences. Maybe a team like Boise St. or someone like that. Those two wild card teams would be seeded 7th and 8th with with those two teams being the only teams eligible who didn’t win their conference.
Even then, you could only have a maximum of two teams from the same conference in the playoffs. So, if the SEC got an extra school then the Big 12 couldn’t get one. Basically, at a minimum you would have seven conferences represented in the playoffs and possibly eight. You would also be assured that 2 or 3 conferences didn’t take up all 8 teams. Teams 7 and 8 would be chosen by a combination of the polls, the computers, and a selection committee. This would reward both teams that won their conference but it would also give a chance to a team that had great year but ended up losing their conference title game. So if SMU went undefeated and beat two or three top 25 teams along the way but lost it’s conference title game to a
solid team then it would have a chance at getting a wild card spot and wouldn’t have to worry about the SEC getting two extra spots or the Big East and Big 12 each getting an extra spot. Only the 8th seed could be from a conference with an extra team, so seven conferences would be represented. An independent school would also have a shot at the 8th seed.0 - AuthorPosts
