O.J. Mayo is one of my favorite young players, and I think he’s going to be really good, but career averages? These seem a little high. For example, Kobe Bryant, one of the best to ever play the game, has career averages of 25.1ppg, 5.3rpg, 4.6apg, 1.5spg, 0.5 bpg, 2.9 to/g, 0.455 fg%, 0.341 3p%.. you can’t be serious in thinking that Mayo will be statistically as good as Kobe? I think these things are kind of silly, and impossible to predict, because of all of the things that can happen in a career. As far as next season, I think we’ll have to see how he’s used. Unlike many who may not have seen O.J. a lot, I think he is a willing passer, and if used as a playmaker, most likely without Conley on the floor, he could get above the 6apg average. If he is used as a more pure 2, as he was last year, I’m thinking more like 21.4ppg 4.3rpg, 3.9apg 1.5 spg

u forget that Kobe didnt really get consistent minutes until his 3rd year. his first year he averaged 7 points, OJ averaged 19. So yeah i think it’s possible for OJ to have similar career average to him.. I just hope that Memphis does the right thing and play him at point guard.

I have lived in LA for Kobe’s entire career, and of course I remember that he was brought along slowly, at least in his first year, but that was kind of my point. Career averages take into account so much… both good and bad times statistically… most players, even the all time greats, take a season or two to get going, and also have some drop off (at least in terms of stats towards the end)… as of right now Kobe’s 25.1 ppg ranks top ten all time, ahead of some prolific scorers (Gervin, Malone, Bird, Shaq etc.)… again I love Mayo, but it’s WAY too soon to project him in that company.

Henry is right, Kobe came off the bench his rookie year, and his second year he was one of the best 6th men in the league that year. I don’t think Mayo will ever have a season where he drops 35 per like Kobe, but the fact that Mayo started right away give him a head start for career averages.

yeah but its all effort. i don’t know if Mayo is the leader, or will spend hours in the gm working on every nuance of his game. he will be good but i don’t think hes that good Kobe is one of the hardest workers of all time.

birdzilla, every article that ive read about Mayo ever since he was in high school talks about what a hard worker he is and how his dedication to improving his game is on MJ and Kobe’s level. I’m not saying he will be on their level because imo he lacks the elite athleticism/quickness that MJ and Kobe have. Still he will be a perenial all-star and if he gets moved to his natural position of point guard then he could really be something special

actually birdzilla its been said many times that oj has that same drive that kobe has (tim grover even said his drive is very close to jordans as well as work ethic) now thats saying something comming from the man who actually trained jordan for years. the constant thing people say about oj is he has the potenial to be a very very special player

what im trying to say is i find his game more like Dwade. Kobe leads by being in your face and being a jerk to you. while Dwayne, and Mayo are more of quiet leaders, their both undersized at the 2 and i think their games are more comparable, and that’s not bad Wade is an amazing player easily top three in the league.

i understand youre point bird..i think people compare him more to kobe because of his worj ethic and his drive so with that and his skills more people use that comparision

yeah but his work ethic is more like Wade where he doesnt get in your face he sets an example by how he plays.

as a rookie he didnt which is what alot of rookies do( kobe did also) by his second and third year once he starts to understand what player does what then he will start doing that. coaches tell you not to get all in most shooting guards face if they can put it on the floor thats just dumb defense if the player knows how to drive

also Kobe came from high school. while Mayo had one year in college and was thew age of a sophmore so he had a head start.

a one year head start.?..i guess i can understand some people thinking thats a big deal. what were kobes second year averages?..i do know his defense wasnt as good as o.j at that point. and if that one year is a difference the other people on here should make that point with john wall and the fact that he had one more year in hs then the other players in his class

actually it was two years Mayo was as old as a sophomore.

actually besides the build mayo does play like kobe minus the showing of emotion.Oj is already a great shooter, d wade is finally refining his shot, he had a pretty good mid-range game but no outside. mayo has that outside shot and people talk about his athleticism, he is not brian scalabrine. He may not have kobe athleticism but he is no slouch.
