If the Knicks whiff on LeBron and Wade, then I think they will shift their focus to Johnson and Rudy Gay. I think there is a good chance that Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari become pieces in sign-and-trades. The 2-4 spots will get filled by talented names that get New Yorkers to believe the Knicks will be a threat. The center spot might not be ideal, but they’ll find some long stretch big who will fit in their system.

The key for them to having any sort of chance of being more than a 30-35 win team sans LeBron/Wade is getting a point guard to run everything. D’Antoni is going to want a pass first point guard, so the list is going to get cut quickly. Sergio Rodriguez is going to get two months to audition for the spot, but I don’t think anyone should really need two months to see Rodriguez isn’t any good. Two teams have already kicked the tires on this guy, and he couldn’t pry minutes from Steve Blake and Beno Udrih. Ridnour is probably the best option of the free agents. My guess is that the Knicks will probably spend one of their second round picks on a pass first point (Jeremy Lin or Ish Smith). Omar Cook seems to finally have had the light gone off in his head, and might be worth a look in the summer league/ training camp. It is possible that if they find a trade scenario to pry D.J. Augustin away from Charlotte. That is the position, though, that makes that system go. They can’t just go at it with Toney Douglas and think it will work.
