I read the rebuild thread and I think the Knicks should go for that rebuild. I think it starts with a Melo trade and that is what I will look at.

Detroit – Melo for Johnson & KCP or 1st rounder (salary contract).
The Pistons do this because they get an elite scorer who will help immediately that will compliment Jackson and Drummond. I think this makes the Pistons a solid threat in the East. The Knicks get a young wing to go with Grant and Porzingis as well as another pick or KCP to help with the rebuild.

Miami – Melo for Deng, Winslow and pick.
The Heat get another big three and still have Whiteside to defend the rim. Knicks can move Deng quite easily, get a young wing in Winslow and another pick to do something with later.

Phoenix – Melo for Bledsoe & Morris.
The Suns get to move Morris and replace with a better version of what he does. Bledsoe is a price to pay, but Knight is good enough at PG and Booker/Goodwin are there to cover SG spot. The Knicks get a fantastic young PG and Grant can play SG as well. Morris can get a fresh start and he still has plenty of potential left IMO.

An outside chance is Lakers if they are still delusional in the fact they want to throw away their youth movement for the sake of keeping Kobe happy.

The Knicks are a disaster and have been for a long time.  Throwing all that money at Melo basically sealed the fact that they would be bad for a while.  Melo is 30 now and they have very few pieces around him.  He wasn’t deserving of that massive contract in my opinion.  Melo has not won anything in his career and is no longer in his prime.  The Knicks are a trainwreck and I don’t see that ending anytime soon.

But Melo was deserving of that contract and after this summer of huge contracts, they caught a deal on him.  Especially next year…   And 30 years old is PRIME.   lol

Knicks are very likely to make the playoffs this year. They nailed the #4 pick with Porzingis, and they got maximum value for Hardaway Jr, in getting Grant.

Then they signed a bunch of solid free agents, and got rid of Bargnani.

They’re in better shape than most realize.

I like the idea more than the proposed trades. I feel you are drastically underrating melo! Stanley Johnson & kcp, not plus a pick or 2, but (or a pick) for melo. Kcp is a solid player who is young, both him & johnson are which adds to the trade value, but just him& a rookie? Stanley is predicted to be good but he still hasn’t played a game, lets wait to see what he becomes before placing that kind of value on him.

Bledsoe& morris?. These 2 are good but they still haven’t led the suns to the playoffs once. There should at least be cash & a 1st round pick thrown in.

The only one that’s fair talent for talent is the miami trade you have proposed. Deng is sliding from his prime but still a top 50-60 player, winslow has upside& I hope that pick is a 1st

First off, saying the Knicks "nailed the 4th pick" is a false statement. At least considering the other moves made during free agency.

In Porzingis, they got a young raw project with a ton of potential… to be good in the future.

Would have been a good time to blow it up and go for a rebuild… Move Carmelo to a playoff contender for young talent and draft picks; start fresh.

Instead, the Knicks failed in free agency to land a significant difference maker, and settled for a handful of average veterans that we may or may not have seen the best of (Afflalo, Lopez, Vujacic?, D. Williams). What it looks like is a sad attempt to fight for an 8th seed in the eastern conference that is getting stronger.

I don’t think the Knicks will make the playoffs this year, but they could fall into the 8th seed if they play their cards right.

Tell me more about my false statement, lol.

Porzingis starts his very first game and has 15 points already in a blow-out win of the supposedly better Bucks.

The reason: he has a no trade clause in his contract, so you’ll have to trade him to a team that he’ll want to play on.

The problem with dealing Melo is most teams in position to win now don’t have the right pieces to offer for him and the ability to fit his huge deal under the cap. I think he does get moved, but after this season. The Suns are a seriously great destination, and the Bulls remain a top notch spot.

The Suns would be a good fit for Melo as he would have to agree to any trade and they have lacked a volume scorer since STAT went to the Knicks.

It all depends what sort of package the Knicks would be offered by any team. Melo is 31 years old now and has played 12 NBA seasons. He will be coming back off surgery so teams would want to see him fit and scoring before they pulled any trade the Knicks would accept.

Also Melo was personally signed by James Dolan so how would he react if Phil tried to trade him. There could be divisions if Phil agreed to a trade but Melo refused to move. Melo may not react well to thinking he is not wanted in NY.

We all know Melo pushed hard to get to NY and has a max deal, sure he’d love to win a title but money, location etc seems to count a lot for Melo and uprooting his family may not be on his list of priorities either. He may feel he’ll ride out his time in NY and could jump onto a legit contender roster for a year or two at the very end of his career.

Knicks might be a legit contender right now if Melo can stay healthy and lead his team on the court, and defend small forwards.

Porzingis is aleady an old pro really, and Robin Lopez is a great center to put with Melo. And Jerian Grant at 22 years old is ready to party right now.

Add in Afflalo, and some solid bench players, and Melo doesn’t really have a ton of excuses this year. In the East anyway.

Pro sports are so crazy – if a GM can put together a team that does not quit than they have a chance to sneak into the playoffs b/c many of the bottom feeding teams in the League basically quit by the All-Star break…

We’ll see if the Knicks can develop chemistry, it really does Not make any sense to tank this season b/c they have No 1st round draft pick…

I know it sounds crazy, but the rarest commodity in the NBA is a star player who can create his own shot, pass out of the double team & flat out score when the whole League turns into a half court grind in the playoffs & Melo is one of only a handful of players in the whole world who can do that… so they might as well go for it –

Derrick Williams, Lopez & Affalo are solid NBA players, Melo is mature & in his prime… They aren’t locked into any of these players long term (except Melo, Porzingus & Grant)… I really wish the Knicks could have gotten their hands on Okafor, but I like what Phil put together considering what he had to work with….

I have to admit – that a big part of me just wants to see Melo is the NBA playoffs & w/ him over 30 & the conference will seemingly solidy over the next couple years – this might be the last time Melo has a chance to lead the Orange & Blue into the post season…

Porzingis has more upside than Okafor because he’s a versatile, two-way player. He’s already so unguardable that he had like 12 or 13 free throws in his very first nba game.

You can’t play Okafor together with another center like Embiid, and despite the stats they put up, Noel and Okafor aren’t the best pairing together either, much like Greg Monroe and Drummond always underperformed because the floor spacing was so bad.

But Porzingis can play next to just about any big player, whether it’s Melo or Robin Lopez or anybody else. That versatility has major value that doesn’t show up in stats, nor does his mere presence at the 3 point line stretching the floor for his other teammates to feast inside.

Porzingis is also probably a better passer. Not to mention he’s 5" taller than Okafor.

By next year Porzingis will probably be 255-260 lbs, and dominant at PF like a young Pau Gasol. Better on defense, perhaps not as skilled or quick on offense, but stronger than Gasol ever was and able to just completely physically dominate opposing PFs.

He might already be that good. 13 fta’s in his first game is the stuff of a future legend.

Not to mention, Porzingis doesn’t get beat back on defense for easy buckets like Okafor always will.

         Solid arguments.

However, I disagree on a couple of things.

        1. I don’t think Porzingis will ever be that heavy. He has a very thin body and he will always be like that. It could be a blessing in disguise, because he’s really agile.

        2. Porzingis is not a  better passer than Okafor. Okafor demands more double teams in the post and his passing ability is really impressive. I’d say it’s close to elite right from the start. Of course, Porzingis has other advantages over Okafor… and he’s way more versatile.

Porzingis will still be skinny at 255-260, just like KG, who weighs about 260 now. And Porzingis is 2-3 inches taller, so he’ll be skinnier than KG and still weigh the same.

The "Porzingis is too skinny" argument is why 98% of NBA fans thought ‘no way is Porzingis as good a prospect as Towns or Okafor or Russell or Winslow’, and why dumb Knicks fan booed their future Hall of Famer on draft night, and why most people thought there was no way he should be the starting PF for the Knicks on opening night.

Porzingis is already up to 240-245. When he gains another 20 lbs you’ll hardly notice it because he’s so tall.

I don’t think they’re better, but even on paper, they were a better team last night IMO.  Bucks were without 2 of their top 3 or 4 players as well as their best guard off the bench.  As a Bucks fan, I was expecting a blow out last night unless MCW happened to be on fire, which he wasn’t.

Giannis is still all potential at this point. He didn’t show anything special in preseason. He’s still just a solid role player with an occasional beautiful highlight.

And Jabari is still a 6’8 PF who gives up as much on defense as he gives you offensively, like a fatter Tobias Harris.

Like I said all summer, Bucks have terrible floor spacing without any good stretch bigs, and MCW is overrated because of his ROY.

Bucks haven’t even been an average team since last Jan-Feb when they traded Knight.
