The Dallas Mavericks expect to have maximum or near-max cap space available next summer and LaMarcus Aldridge undoubtedly would be a top target.

Aldridge is in the final season of a five-year, $65 million contract with the Portland Trail Blazers.

Aldridge rejected a three-year, $55 million extension this summer, just as other superstar players have done due to the financial benefit of waiting for free agency.

“It’s just financially smarter to wait,” said Aldridge at the time. “And I’m looking forward to signing the five-year deal when the chance comes.”

Aldridge was asked about free agency on Thursday.

“Ease up on that,” he said.

Aldridge is a native of the Dallas area.

“That’s hard to speculate,” Brandan Wright said. “He says he wants to be here (in Portland). I’m going to take his word for it, especially this early in the season.”

Dirk Nowitzki would be interested in having Aldridge join the Mavericks, even though they have similar games.

“I think I’ve showed in my career that I can play with anybody in this league,” Nowitzki said. “In some situations, he’s playing the five [center] when they go small, so …”

Both Chandler and Dirk are getting up there in age. Maybe it’s time for Dirk to follow the path of Tim Duncan and Pau Gasol and shorten his minutes to lengthen his career?

Isn’t Dallas capped out and out of valuable assets outside of maybe Dirk and Parsons???

I’d love to see LA stay in Portland and buck the trend of jumping at the 1st sign of hard times, besides the fact that the Blazers are getting better and have a few really good players around him and Damien Lilliard…

Dallas would be scary with Rondo at PG…

Read the OP, Dallas has cap space and he is going into free agency.

Dallas will have a load of cap space next summer but would LMA jump ship to play with a 37 year old Dirk Nowitzki I do wonder. LMA will get a load of FA offers and will get the chance to play with much younger running mates.

I wonder if a 3 man front court combo of LMA, Chandler and Dirk could work with someone like Brandan Wright picking up the spare minutes around them. There are 96 front court minutes and if we assume LMA plays 35mpg plus then the older Dirk and Chandler could reduce down to under 30mpg easily.

It is an interesting option but I think LMA is thinking of a 5 year max deal in Portland personally, he has turned $55 million over 3 years so will be looking for something around $100 million over 5 years I figure. This would be effectively a 30% of the cap max as he would be in the player with 7-9 years experience bracket under the current CBA.
