In recent years there have been a number of players who were not drafted in the lottery or the first round who have ended up being just as good or even better than highly ranked prospects who played the same position as them. It’s nothing new but here’s a few examples from recent draft classes

    2009:
    Jrue Holiday (17) > Jonny Flynn (6)
    DeJuan Blair (37) > Jordan Hill (8)
    Marcus Thornton (43) > Terrence Williams (11)

    2010
    Avery Bradley (19) > Wesley Johnson (4)

    2011:
    Chandler Parsons (38) > Jan Vesely (6)
    Kenneth Faried (22) > Bismack Biyombo (7)
    Isaiah Thomas (60) > Jimmer Fredette (10)

What projected mid-first rounders to projected second rounders have the potential to better than projected lottery picks in this year’s draft?

Gorgui Dieng, Shane Larkin, Tim Hardaway Jr, DeShaun Thomas, Russ Smith if he can play the point.

Kelly Olynyk > Cody Zeller – Olynyk’s ability to score away from the basket will allow him to be more effective on offense. Plus, Olynyk is underrated defensively.

Adreian Payne > Mason Plumlee (not really a lottery, but still) – Payne has a more defined niche as a shot blocker/energy player. He could develop into an effective big in a team’s rotation.

Doug McDermott > Glenn Robinson III – Glenn Robinson III may have a more defined NBA position, but his skill set is lacking. GR3 is very raw and doesn’t really excel at one area of the game, except perhaps off ball defense. McDermott has a defined NBA skill in his shooting ability and is an underrated rebounder.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here so go ahead and neg me, I could care less

    Nate Wolters>MCW
I just don’t see MCW being able to create for anyone at the next level and his shooting ability won’t help either
As for Wolters I his creativity and shooting

    Mitch McGray>Cody Zeller
Really grew less of a fan of Zeller as the season went on
McGary is finally getting his minutes and showing what he is about, hustle with that athleticism and strength will pay off in the NBA

    Dario Saric>Anthony Bennett
For some reason I just don’t like Bennett as a prospect to me he is to short or the PF and he is just straight not a sf at all
Saric on the other hand is so skilled and to me should be a top 10 pick in this draft

    CJ McCollum > Trey Burke
    Kelly Olynyk > Cody Zeller
Pierre Jackson and Nate Wolters > Michael Carter-Williams

    This isn’t a lottery one but….
    Allen Crabbe > Archie Goodwin

Jordan Hill shouldn’t have been the 8th pick.
Jordan Hill’s first 2 years weren’t good but had been a key back up for the Lakers until the season ending injury, while DeJuan has been picking up DNP CD for the Spurs a lot this season.

IMO Jordan Hill > DeJuan Blair but not by a lot.

I’d really hate to say this since I’ve been a fan of James McAdoo since his high school days when he played on those USA junior national teams, but he just plays too soft in the post and he doesn’t have a very good mid range jumper so I can’t see him being successful in the NBA.
