Skeating12345ParticipantI may get negged like crazy for this, but I would honestly draft Noah Vonleh before I draft Julius Randle. Don’t get me wrong, I love Randle’s game. Hes a monster down low. He has great strength, he is a very good athlete, a good ball-handler for his size, and has nice size at 6’9. But he is not a very good jumpshooter, he has average length, and does not have elite athleticism to make up for it. He is also VERY left-handed, and he is able to get away with just bullying players in the paint in college, which he wont be able to get away with in the L. I think Randle will be a very good pro, but long-term, I like Vonleh better.
Vonleh as very nice size at around 6’9 with around a 7’4 wingspan. He also has very good strength, with body that can stand to put on more weight. His size makes up for his very good, but not elite athleticism. He has also shown a very promising post game during his freshman season at IU. Vonleh also has shown nice potential on his jumpshot. Though on limited attempts, he is shooting over 50% from 3, and around 72% from the stripe, with very nice mechanics.
I love both Randle and Vonleh as NBA prospects, I would just honestly take Vonleh first. Let me know what yall think, whether you agree or disagree, and why?

JamesBaker3195ParticipantRandle undoubtedly has more potential could be a star. But he could also miss the mark. Vonleh is the safer pick and he’ll probably get you a double-double most nights in the NBA.

jwall1ParticipantI disagree. I could care less that Julius has average height or wingspan, he is a better athlete, rebounder, and scorer than Vonleh. Randle also has a better motor and is stronger than Vonleh. And just because Julius has not shot the ball much does not mean he can shoot. Vonleh has been good, but I just don’t feel he has star potential like Randle does. Even today, Randle was not a big factor offensively, but he rebounded and was a big factor on the defensive game down the stretch. The intagibles Randle brings would make him tough to pass on if I were to be choosing between him and Vonleh. They are the 2 best 4 prospects in the draft, and even though I feel Randle will be better, both will should excel in the NBA.

GoJOSH HUESTISParticipantVonleh is a. Good player and good potential but this isn’t even debatable. Randle gets doubled and tripled more than anyone in college and it’s not even close. A scouting service showed he gets doubled and tripled more than any player in the past decade (more than Durant due to Durant being able to play outside and Hansboro due to his teammates) yet still gets numbers.
I dont see see bust potential for one simple fact, he has a high motor and goes hard after rebounds. He’s actually a better shooter than he’s shown (according to scouts at practice and Cal) but he gets doubled as soon as he gets it on the elbow. When he gets a one on one matched ESPN showed that he averages 1. Something per possession

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantI’m not usually one to over rate prospects but we could legitimately be arguing about guys going 7 and 8 in a draft and they could become as good as Stoudamire and Bosh at the end of their rookie deals.
I have been wondering why Vonleh has been so low in mocks for a while. I think he is a better fit for 20 out of 30 teams in the NBA. Randle is an alpha and alpha’s don’t always fare well if they aren’t the best players on a team. Its hard for them to learn how to learn to be a role player. I think Randle is a cut above Thomas Robinson as a prospect and post player but it will certainly be a "buyer beware" situation in drafting power forwards 6’8ish whose best skill is posting up.

he_gets_bucketsParticipantI think the left handed-ness is getting slowly more and more overblown. Being left hand dominant isnt a stock killing trait, once he hits the L and has a team of NBA coaches mentoring him, he will be able to develop his right hand. I will concede right now that he is EXTREMELY left hand dominant, and even when he goes right he usually spins back left, these are things that are very easily straightened out with coaching. However, his relentless motor and physical mindset is not something that can be taught, which is why I would personally take him over Vonleh.

MopgrassParticipantI think people are underestimating how hood of a rebounder Randle is.

Ebown5ParticipantThe thing that people sleep on with Randle as a prospect is that regardless of how many things he can or can’t do, he will have at least one skill that will make him a star. He HAS to be double teamed in the post or he will kill you and get all of your bigs in foul trouble.
His ultimate ceiling will be determined by how he handles those double teams. Currently he turns the ball over a lot, but he will get better at dealing with them. All he stuff about left hand dominance, and bullying his way to the basket only really comes into play in how he handles the double. He will HAVE to be doubled even in the nba, and how many post players in the league get doubled every time they get it?
He is a very good ball handler and shooter too, and he could definitely stretch a defense in spots. It is a testament to the strength of this draft that he is probably going to go in the 4-7 range because in an average draft he would contend for the first pick.
His average length will make it hard for him to really be a good defender, but his rebounding, strength and effort means that he will hold his own. A lot of defense is just high effort and competitiveness.

Meditated StatesParticipantRandle is going to be very effective early. ROY candidate. Randle should go 1st. His jumper is gonna fall often in the nba when he is not the focal point. He should go 1st. Wiggins does nada off the dribble. Parker will score but I see Randle doing more things than just that.

GoJOSH HUESTISParticipantAgreed the only go left thing is overblown. He actually goes and finishes right a good amount of time but what does a player go to when he needs a bucket and it’s successful a good percentage of the time……he goes to his strongest hand. He actually goes right more than right handed players go left. He’s also a very good defender (when he wants to be) which isn’t surprising with a high motor player. In the beginning of the year he was bad due to being lazy, cal has benched him plenty of times because of it but now he has become one of their better defenders and he’s starting to get steals and more blocks. IMO he’s a mix between Lamar Odom (not as patient a ball handler or as good but a step below) and Zbo.
