What do you guys think about him? Outlook? Capabilities? Ceiling? Kind of a shame he never got mins on a bad Char team that could’ve developed him a bit more. I never followed the 14 Draft so I don’t know alot about him.

Solid perimeter skills for a guy his size, can put the ball on the deck a little bit, able to take it to the rack well in the face up game. Not an elite athlete, but has a good first step and can beat guys his size off the dribble somewhat regularly. Has struggled like most young bigs who come in nowadays at finishing against the much more physical NBA defenses. Gets lost on defense at times, though it seems to be more of a lack of awareness as opposed to a motor issue, something that can be fixed relatively easily by sitting him down in the offseason and making him study tape on rotations and help defense. Has the attributes to be at least a serviceable defender at the NBA level and should be a plus defender once he fills out his frame and can bang against guys in the post. Ridiculously long arms, should be swatting shots and snatching rebounds though needs refinement in both these areas. In a relatively small sample size this season, he really struggled shooting the ball, from all areas, shooting sub 40% from three and inside the arc. I don’t think thats an accurate representation of his abilities as an offensive player, but is clearly an indicator that he needs refinement on that end and a bit of work on his shot selection- at this stage he should be just finishing shots at the rim and taking the occasional outside jumper, not much more.

If he can develop his outside shot more and become respectable from mid range and possible deep I could see him being a Bosh light. At this point, he has a Brandon Bass sort of game, can hit a few mid range jumpers, put max effort in, clean the glass some, though hasn’t quite filled out enough to bang on the boards as much as is needed for a starting big guy

Should provide quality minutes as the 1st big off the bench for Portland, though if he is thrusted into the starting lineup I could see numbers in the realm of 14/8, assuming Aldridge leaves.

The Hornets once again went for the miss. Vonleh is 6-9, 247 pounds while sporting a massive 7-4 ¼ wingspan. He had the largest height-to-wingspan differential (8 ¼ inches) in 2014 draft. He also has freakishly large hands in terms of length (9 ¾) and width (11 ¾). He’s a good 3 point shooter (exactly what you need in today’s stretch 4’s games!!).

But yet for some reason the Hornets thought it’s a better idea to play Marvin Williams & Cody Zeller before him (not to mention that there were later rumors that they’re shopping Zeller). They’re clearly not in contending shape, so why not try and develop this freak of nature?? I just don’t get it.

IMO the Blazers got a steal over here.

The Bobcats/Hornets really like to draft power forwards. They took Emeka Okafor in 2004 (PF/C), Sean May in 2005, Brandon Wright in 2007 (Granted he was dealt immediately for Jason Richardson), Alexis Ajinca in 2008 (PF/C), Bismack Biyombo a center the size of a power forward in 2011 (Acquired after he was drafted on draft night), Tobias Harris in 2011 (SF/PF traded on draft night although he was clearly a better choice than Biyombo), Cody Zeller in 2013 (PF/C),  Noah Vonleh in 2014, and Frank Kaminsky in 2015 (listed at C but will likely play both). In the Bobcat/Hornets 11 years of existence they’ve drafted or acquired 9 players who could play power forward on draft night with first round picks.

I feel so bad for Frank Kaminsky. I think he has legitimate talent but with a trainwreck franchise like the Hornets, I suspect that he’ll never be able to demonstrate it with them. Hopefully he’ll be traded to a better run team in a few years. There is, after all, precedent for that.

Vonleh is talented and I think he’ll make it in the league to me his ceiling is Chris Bosh but realistically he’ll probably be a Tristan Thompson player (which isn’t bad at all)

Vonleh was always thought of as a guy that would take a couple years to get going in the NBA so not a surprise he didn’t get time on bad Charlotte team because of that plus his sports hernia that wiped him out in September. I think he could be a good pick and roll big man and good guy in transition because he is mobile. I think his ceiling is as a complimentary starter that could be a 2nd or 3rd best player on a team.
