When looking at this years lotto picks, I just thought to myself, is this the smallest draft size wise we have seen in recent years?

Just looking at the lotto I feel like it is small. Looking at players bigger then 6’10 in this draft we only have two, and only one if Saric doesn’t make the lotto.

    In the past 10 years in drafts, number of players 6’10 or bigger are;

    2013 – 5
    2012 – 4
    2011 – 3
    2010 – 6
    2009 – 4
    2008 – 3
    2007 – 7
    2006 – 5
    2005 – 5
    2004 – 5

Is there any reason for this? Maybe the NBA moving towards smaller line ups rather then just drafting these really big men on potential. Or maybe it is completely meaningless? hahaha

Did anyone else think this was strange?

This year the top is a lot more wing and guard heavy, with a few smaller 4’s(Randle, Vonleh, Gordon depending on where you think he will play) and the lone center projected to go Lotto in Embiid. Next year there are heaps of bigs however so whilst I do think the NBA is moving towards smaller lineups, I dont think big guys will stop being coveted any time soon. Guys like Jahlil Okafor, Alex Turner, Karl Towns etc are still going to go high in the next few years, despite smaller line ups being more prevalent.

You mean Myles Turner, considering Alex Turner is an unknown prospect to me 😉

he gets buckets prettymuch hit the nail on the head, but the OP got me wondering how many guys 6’10 and over I had in my mock.

I had 4 guys in the first round: Payne, Saric, Nurkic and Capela. Intersting that 3 of them were international. I had 8 guys in the second round.

That kind of makes me nervous about my mock, as it’s statistically improbable, but I think it highlights a good point. Although there aren’t many elite level guys at or above 6’10 in this draft there are some big guys you can find later in the draft that will be able to contribute.

The 2009 draft was pretty low on tall guys too. I think it was Blake Griffin, BJ Mullen and Thabeet were the only tall guys in that draft, I think ? That actualy had NBA talent at the PF and Center postition.

Also, I think one of you touched on it, there are only a total of 4 guys taller then 6’10 in the first round of Arans mock. If this holds true, when was the last time only 4 players taller then 6’10 went in the first round?

True, but look at the size of the 1, 2 and 3’s in this draft.

    Wiggins – SF – 6’8.75”

    Parker – SF – 6’9”

    Exum – PG – 6’6”

    Smart – PG – 6’3.25”

    Staus – SG – 6’6.5”

    LaVine – PG/SG – 6’5”

    James Young – SG – 6’7”

    Elfrid Payton – PG – 6’3.75”

Those are just off the top of my head. Again, you’re totally right about the bigs, but this class has a freaking huge crop of 1’s,2’s and 3’s.

Cauley Stein, Dakari Johnson, and Marcus Lee stayed in school, Tarczewski stayed in school, Porzingis pulled out, Harrell stayed in school, and while he’s not 6’10 he did look taller than 6’9 Randle and he would have been a top 20 pick. I’m probably missing another tall guy who stayed in school but would have been a first rounder. As is, don’t be surprised if Tavares and maybe one other tall guy besides McGary sneak into the first round. Maybe Jokic.
