flyboyParticipantHis overall efficiency numbers aren’t overwhelmingly high. He’s put very good numbers in points on the board in an somewhat inconsistent fashion, is very very inconsistent with his driving game and actually getting to the FT line, his passes are not crisp, he’s got tunnel vision, he’s a poor rebounder, and he’s about average I’d venture as a defender. I think he’s decent on ball at times, but he seems to lose focus a lot off ball (and on ball as well) and it results in him getting blown by.
So, with all of this said, why do people look at Young as a legit #1 option? I like Nick a lot, being a Wiz fan, but he’s not going to be a #1 option on a team and lead them to victories. He’s a RFA at the end of the year and almost certainly will be overpaid and remain in Washington. I think the bandwagoning of Nick at times has been out of control. What do you all think?

I disagree with you though about his scoring efficiency. For a guy who takes a ton of shots, 45% from the field, 39% from the 3 point line, and 81% from the line are extremely good numbers. Problem is outside of scoring he brings nothing as a ball player. Bad defense, no rebounding or passing. He also is an extremely moody people and I don’t think his attitude would fly on a contending team. He is extremely talented but he needs to grow up and work on being a basketball player not just a scorer.

I ‘ve watched just about every Wizards game this season and he makes smart high-i.q. type plays he is just lacking effort most of the time and if his offensive game isn’t clicking, he rarely ever makes up for it by putting more effort in another category, which IMO "showcases" his laziness…..
I think that on a good team, Nick Young is a high-scoring 6th man of the year type player- an instant offense threat off the bench.

WizardofOzParticipantI think people underrate Nick’s defense. He’s not the flashiest defender (getting steals and chase-down blocks), but he stays in front of his man. I’m too lazy to pull up the stats now, but I saw this stat that showed that the man he’s guarding scores at an extremely low rate.
I do agree that he’s not a #1 option though. He’s too one-dimensional on offense. He doesn’t get a good amount of rebounds and assist (even though I think he’s been doing a better job in both areas lately). I also think he should drive more (even though he’s been doing a better job of this and getting to the free-throw line also).

Throughout the year, he’s looked out of shape, rusty, unsure of himself, and has kind of a gut because of the foot injury, which has limited his quickness and lift (and you have to take this stuff into account because he isn’t a physicical player). He mainly scores on people by blowing by them with his quickness, but he hasn’t been able to do that this season. And when he can’t get by his man, he usually settles for heavily contested jumpshots. He’s regressed this year, but IMO, it looks like he’s shedded the extra weight, so I can see him playing well from here on out.
He has to try to be a difference maker though. He’s just out there on the court. It started making me sick when Gil started doing that and now he’s is the same way. You are getting paid alot of money. You cant just cruise through games. Dont you have any passion or self pride? No one respects your game like that. Even your stats mean nothing. Its just stats because someone has to get them on a team but they mean nothing.
And his mid-range game has dissapeared. It’s a big part of his weapon, but it’s sucked this season. He’s shooting it like Gil was before he got traded. He’s just nonchalantly shooting. You got to be in rhythm and step into it. He’s probably lost confidence too.
