 Who are some players that played at an All-Star level in their careers but NEVER made an All-Star appearance?

Lets make this a 2-year All-Star level of play minimum.   For instance, Kyle Lowry would not count because this is his first year playing at an All-Star level.  However, Josh Smith does count so I will put him down.

Mike Bibby use to be really good back in the Sacremento Kings days.  Dude was a 20 pts 7 ast machine.  I don’t know what is a bigger injustice, Bibby never making an allstar game, or that Kings team never making an NBA final.

 yeah, good call on Bibby, I remember him playing and thinking that he had to be an All-Star back then but he wasnt.  when you say it now, it still doesnt seem as if he never made it….he was really good.

well thats a good reason to site.  thats usually the #1 thing that keeps All-Star level players out of the game.  

I was going to say Doc Rivers but had to go back and double check and he did make the All-Star team once….so maybe this question isnt as easy as I thought.

for the record….Ellis’ team success have held him off too….Josh Smith is truly one I think has been deserving for a while.

 mwalling2117 made me thing about how good those Kings team’s were and how under represented their teams were in the all star games.  I’d say Vlade Divac could have definitely been considered more than once.  Vlade actually made the team one year, but was an injury execption put in by stern…i felt like he shoulda been given more consideration.  Stephen Jackson during the years at golden state averaged about 20, 4, and 5.  Al Jefferson during his latter years for celtics averaged 20+ 11rebs and 2 blocks, probably should have made one all star team to be honest.  Jason Williams aka White Chocolate would have been spectacular to see at an all star game.  Kevin Martin for the rockets use to average 25 pts and 3 rebs 3 assists while he was at Sac-Town.    Toni Kukoc.  Jason Terry as one of the best sixth man this game has seen.  

 

I also feel like Eric Gordon and Monta Ellis will always play at the All Start type level but will probably never make an all star team.

Lamar Odom.  The timing is not great to be discussing him as an all-star, but the guy has played a very high level for a number of year and I think he was all stat worthy in 2008-2009 season and could also argue his rookie season in 1999-2000 when he averaged 16.6 points 7.8 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

I dont know if he is necessary an all star type player, but Jason Terry has never made an all star game.

 yes, I believe Terry had some All-Star worthy years but I think that he never made it because its rare that a 6th man will get a spot.

 Lowry was already really good last year, especially with defense included. I think he should count. 

I was absolutely right when I said before that draft that he’d be better than Conley. 🙂

 

I dont’ think Kevin martin has ever made an All-star game either.

 Bruce Bowen,

He doesn’t embody everything that goes with the All-Star game.  Big names, flashy passes, high scoring dunk fest, no defense, BUT he was an All-Defensive 1st teamer 5 times in his career, and a 2nd teamer 3 times.  He was a top 10 league defender for close to a decade and 3 time NBA champ, but never made 1 All-Star team.

He also lead the NBA in 3 point % in 02-03…

 Rod strickland made all nba second team and lead the league in assist in 98 with the bullets/wizards and got so mad he said he’d refuse to play if he was selected the next season. Rod got robbed

Rodman made it twice….shouldve been more.

You got me with Derek Harper, cant believe he didnt make it, especially with those good Mavs teams.

Byron Scott couldve easily made it but then that would be the whole Lakers starting lineup because for a few years Magic, Worthy, and Kareem were making it.

Josh Smith. how a guy as solid a player as he is and as exciting to watch also has never been an All Star is crazy to me. and he can be a monster defensively. its a travesty. despite the boo’s we give him WHENEVER he takes a jumpshot, Josh Smith means a shitload to the franchise our city. all atliens should band together and campaign for Josh for 2013. we got you Smoove. just chill on the jumpers.

 I was watching special on the Mavs team and Aguirre and Blackmon were All-Stars but Harper and Perkins were not.  Thinking about it Sam Perkins couldve been a candidate a few times.  Also, Purvis Short played on a bad GSW team, but I think it was the fact that he was competing against some of the greatest scorers of all times.  He avg 28ppg and didnt make it.  Next season, 25.5ppg and still didnt make it.  Below was 1984-85 scoring leaders.

I think Ron Harper and Derek Harper are the biggest old school snubs that I can think of.

Monta Ellis and Josh Smith are the two current biggies with Rudy Gay being third. Rudy might make it
next year though.

It seems like most of the good guys in the Eighties and Nineties made it. Muggsy Bogues is a pretty big (uh, short)
snub. Never a big scorer but a big assists and steals guy. Not sure he made it.

I am not sure if Michael Cooper made it either. One of the best defenders of a generation with several titles,
but he wasn’t a big scorer.

I don’t think that Rony Seikaly made it either. He put up some pretty good stats on a few solid Heat teams (and some bad ones)
but the East was relatively loaded at center from the late 80’s to mid 90’s.

Good call on Marcus Canby, he was a DPOY winner but never made an All Star line up due to depth of frontcourt talent.

Emeka Okafor who as putting up 14/10 during his time at Charlotte might have got recognised if he had done this on a contending team.

Richard Jefferson was having 20ppg seasons with a contending Nets team so might have been in the mix but they already had Kidd and Carter as All Star locks at the same time.

Tayshaun Prince was a key part of Detroit’s success between 2003 and 2008 so might have got a one off recognition.

Jamal Crawford again a good scorer could have maybe sneaked in one year.

 yes, Camby was All Star level for a few years, forgot about that.  

as for Sam Cassell, he luckily got one, but he shouldve had more.  he avg over 18ppg for 8 different seasons, he made the all-star game with the T-Wolves, but couldve made it when he was with the Bucks, and definitely when he was with the Clips when he led them to the 2nd round of the playoffs….and almost a 50 win season.
