BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantThe NCAA has ruled that freshman Enes Kanter must stop practicing with the University of Kentucky basketball team as he awaits a ruling on his eligibility status.
The NCAA is reviewing Kanter’s eligibility status in light of questions about whether he’s an amateur. He played for a professional team in his native Turkey the past three years. Earlier this year, The New York Times reported that the team, Fenerbahce Ulker, gave Kanter and his family between $100,000 and $150,000 in benefits in that time period.
When a player’s eligibility status is being reviewed, he or she can practice no more than 45 days with the team. Kanter’s 45-day clock began in early August when UK began preparing for an August exhibition series in Canada.
The NCAA granted Kanter a waiver to continue practicing until the end of September. That waiver expired Thursday.
"Starting today, the student-athlete is prohibited from practicing to include the upcoming Midnight Madness practice," NCAA spokesman Chuck Wynne wrote Friday in an e-mail.
Kentucky could ask for another waiver so Kanter can resume practice.
Kanter’s status has become a rallying cry among Kentucky fans. The line of tents outside Memorial Coliseum this week included several "Free Enes" signs.

canesboy6ParticipantI dont know how much more clearcut it can get than this case. If he was a professional player, he cant be an amatuer. They have accounts and bank records of payment. Professional players get paid, duhhhhhh.
I Hate UK and was realllly nervous that Kanter would get cleared because he is the real deal.

Mr. 19134ParticipantI absolutely hate the NCAA.

llperezwell, if the former team pro club in europe is telling the truth, there is no reason to hate the ncaa over this. If he was a proffesional basketball player, you dont get to play in college. Of all the things to criticize the ncaa over, that has to be one of the most easily agreeable rules out there.

nascarforthedeadParticipantBut the team isn’t telling the truth. Kanter’s family kept meticulous records of all transactions. Of course the Turkish gm is going to say otherwise because it benefits him greatly for Kanter to not play for UK. I’d be shocked if he wasn’t cleared to play and only miss between 4-10 games. There is no proof that the kid was a pro so don’t try and act like it’s such a close and shut case.

llperezand you know there is no proof? The team provided documented proof just like the parents provided documented proof. Both sides have every reason to lie becasue the family wants him in college as well as the team owner wanting him to not be eligible. The ncaa is still investigating it. My very first sentece was "if the former team pro club" becasue i dont know yet either. But if he was in fact paid, then yes this is a an open and shut case which is what i was reffering to.

doubledribblerParticipantPay = no play in NCAA basketball. I mean come on now. We just saw Reggie Bush lose the Heisman because of benefits recieved and whatnot and basically help (because he wasn’t the only cause) to put USC in a semi rebuilding phase. Kentucky may be lucky that he doesn’t suit up, because who knows if he had suited up and then this came out, especially if anyone with UK connected knew about it. Coach Cal knows how to vacate some wins, but no need to help rush the process.
By the way, ridiculous was when the NCAA suspended the football player for selling his jersey to a guy that apparently was an agent, even though he had no knowledge of this.
