Being a fan of Carolina (obviously) and a fan of the ACC, I am absolutely stunned at the showing NC State put up all season.  It looks like this team quit on Mark Gottfried a long time ago.  It’s hard to believe this team beat Duke at Cameron a little while ago.  They had the talent to be a tournament team at the very least, but their season turned into an epic disaster.  In my opinion, I’d go as far to say that this is one of the worst coaching jobs I have ever seen during my time watching college basketball.  Dennis Smith basically just wasted his entire college career playing for an absolutely horrific coach.  The guy is insanely talented and will be a top ten pick in this years draft, but you could tell he was so frustrated as the Pack’s season just spiralled out of control.  I can’t see Mark Gottfried ever getting another high profile coaching job after the showing his team put up this season.  What are you guys opinions on NC State?

Since taking over at NC State, the program has the most wins in the ACC after Carolina. It’s ridiculous to fire him after one bad season. It is even worse that they fired him in the regular season.

umm… no. Gottfried is 48-58 in conference over his 6 seasons at NC State. There’re more than a few teams that had more ACC wins over that span.

You know this is one of those situations on my opinion where the coach that got fired didnt necassarily do a bad job. It just never worked out man. He did a great job recruiting and when players stayed to develop and didnt transfer or try to go to the NBA they learned from him and played well.

Hes had about 10 players he recruited leave the program. Leslie left early, Brown, Lacey, Warren. Purvis was supposed to be great but transfered to Uconn. Cody and Caleb Martin transfering and Freeman getting injured really hurt them.  I thought they would be good this year with Yurtseven but I dont know why I thought Dennis Smith coming off an injury as a freshman would be an upgrade over Cat Barber.

Abu has really underachieved this year and I think that its tough to build a team when the last three years your team is based on high usage players that leave and thenchangess every year. This year it was Smith, last year it was Barber and the year before it was Warren. Warren and Barber scored well over 20-ppg.

Some bright spots would be Rowan has really improved this year and so has Henderson. I think Kapita will eventually be an NBA prospect and they will still have Abu and Yurtseven as well. Theres talent here if a coach can bring over some recruits.

Im a State fan, and this year was pretty hard to watch. This season was very reminiscent of 2013 when we opened up at 6 in the country and then got bounced in the first round. We have the talent to make some real national noise but Gottfried doesn’t seem to be able to get the absolute best out of his players. All I can hope is someone like Archie miller can come in and right the ship

State grad here. I am happy he was let go.

He is a great recruiter but horrible coach. The amount of talented transfers is also a red flag as we keep losing our talented recruits.

It is very exciting seeing top prospects like Dennis Smith on our team, but the quality of team play is unbearable to watch and has been for a while now other than watching a few of our studs play (Smith, Barber, Warren)

The worst of all is State teams always lack maturity and mental toughness and that is a large part due to poor coaching. I think every State fan can empathize when I say I have lost years of my life watching State blow late game leads multiple times a year.

I know its a long shot, but I would love to give the coaching opportunity to Brandon Roy. Yes, the ex Portland player. He would instantly be an amazing recruiter from his success recruiting as a HS coach (Took an average HS team and made them the #1 team in the nation), would be respected by the players, and hopefully his high bball IQ will eventually translate to a good coach.

Yeah the team was very undisciplined. I kinda remember one game where this loosy goosy play really showed. I forget the scenerio but Im prerty sure it was late in the 4th with about 40 seconds left they were down by one possession and he yelled out "dont foul" but his player thought he heard "foul" and he gave the foul causing State to lose. I think that was the play that got hin fired tbh. Was it Abu?

Nobody talks about Beejay Anya’s 7’9 wingspan anymore because he’s well over 300 lbs now thanks to NC State’s negligence. Smith should’ve just went to Duke, that team needed a point guard.

I think Anya’s weight problems were due to his own negligence. You can tell players what to do to get better, but it’s kind of up to them to actually put the work in over the summer. Anya was a guy that clearly just played basketball because he was big and was never really motivated to get better or stay in shape. Hard to blame that on the coaching staff.

It’s sad because he actually could have been an NBA player if he did. Maybe he just does not enjoy it. If he ever got his body in shape he would have been such a great shot blocker and defender.

its not that Gottfried was so good, its just that Sidney Lowe was so bad. thats what made it look like Gottfried was doing something when he first got there and took Lowe’s team to the Sweet 16. I dont know what the hell he was doing to get all the players he got, but if it wasnt against the rules, then him and his staff has to be one of the best recruiters out there.

horrible coaching.  same Sweet 16 team came back the next year with more talent finished basically the same overall and in the conference and got bounced 1st round of tourney.  writing was on the wall then.  but State was so desperate to win and had suffered through years of Lowe and Robinson and even Sendek who was ok but peaked and had a boring style of play.

it is best they moved on from Gottfried, but the question is, who will they replace him with?  Archie Miller is top candidate, but would he accept it?  The issue is, most of the teams in the ACC arent willing to pay enough money to get the best coaches in to be able to compete with UNC, Duke, Cuse, Louisville, etc….
