AderitoParticipantAfter considering a proposal from its competition committee, the NBA will bring back 5-on-5 competition for next year’s draft combine, league sources told ESPN.com
General managers and scouts have been complaining for years that the lack of competition between prospects at the annual draft showcase lessens the scouting value of the combine. Since 2009, the NBA has had the 60 or so prospects invited to the combine run through various shooting and ballhandling drills with some minor simulated 3-on-2 action.
What the community thing about it ?

WetalkinboutpracticeParticipantLong over due. Definitely a good idea, but I anticipate we’ll see more prospects than usual sit the event out due to risk of injury, their agents will definetly make sure of it. Don’t expect to see too many future lottery picks competing in the 5-on-5’s, they’ll stick to the status quo and save the good stuff for the individual & group team workouts.

AderitoParticipantIf they want to get paid millions of dollars they should be made to do absolutely everything the teams want them to do and it should be televised and its very simple, if a player is healthy and refuses to participate, he can´t be drafted. That will force all the prima donnas to show up.

King CaluchaParticipantWhy do you want to oblige them?

MopgrassParticipantI don’t think just because you pay someone a bunch of money, you can require them to do whatever you want. However, they could make the combine like a mandatory job interview.

Rip255I love the idea. Can you imagine how hard those guys will be playing, considering there’s millions of dollars on the table if they play well.
I don’t care if the players with high stock sit out. They sit out anyway. If we’ve got 60 prospects playing legit games in front of hundreds of NBA scouts. I’m watching!

Mr. HookShotParticipantPlayers not participating in the combine is definitely an issue. Generally, players and agents use two arguments for not participating. One is that they "fear of getting injured". Although this might seem valid players could get injured just as easy during their regular draft preperpation process. I think the chances of getting injured during the combine is smaller due to the high-quality trainers and facilities (medical staff etc.), and that the level of competition is better than what these players get during their regular offseason work-outs.
The other reason is just not to expose yourself too much to scouts around the league. This directly clashes with the purpose of the combine, which is for scouts and teams to better compare and evaluate prospects. From that point of view it makes a lot of sense for the NBA to make participating in the combine obligatory, except when an independent doctor diagnoses a player with an injury that doesn’t allow him to participate.
I think the NBA should make the physical tests mandatory, not only for the scouts and teams but also for the large share of fans who enjoy the draft process as a whole. This way players can be compared under equal circumstances, giving teams at least some information on which to compare players.

GBeeParticipantawesome. gms would get to see a bunch of 2nd rounders and maybe late 1st rounders jockeying for position. they still won’t see the cream of the crop participating. the latter have something to lose participating and not much to gain.
this doesnt mean much. they cant force them to participate in anything. those kids aren’t even part of the league yet. if gms refuse to take players who don’t participate then they risk passing up on a great talent.

OhCanada-ParticipantIt should be mandatory that any player invited to the Combine that enlisted their name into the draft must participate unless unable due to special circumstances such as an injury, family crisis, scheduling issues (euro players under contract), etc. In return the NBA should have tiered compensation for any players who are injured during the combines.

OhCanada-ParticipantAnd possibly a tiered compensation based on an evaluated ranking on each players potential draft selection as predicted in a poll format by each participating teams scouting crew.
This would aslo mean that players participating in the combine can no longer test the waters as thier amateur status would no longer be valid, but something really needs to change. We shouldve seen Wiggins and Parkers combine testing this year its kind of ridiculous the way things are
