The NBA is getting more and more like a video game just chucking up 3 pointers.

    Houston Rockets last game:

    19-35 2 pts = 54%
    21-50 3 pts = 42%

Its just simple maths – per 100 shots

    54 x 2pts = 108 pts
    42 x 3 pts = 126 pts

    50 x 3pt attempts in 48 mins, that’s just over 1 attempt each minute, while attempting just 0.73 2pt attempts !!

There are some drawbacks of having everyone on your team shoot three pointers though:

    1) It hurts your team’s rebounding – without one or two players in the paint your chances to grab an offensive board really fall. Also inside players are typically bigger and might make defensive rebounding harder as well.

    2) You don’t draw fouls. There is a much bigger chance to draw a foul on a drive or inside basket. Getting the other team in foul trouble can REALLY help you late in the game.

    3) Inside scoring teams are usually more consistent. Even the very best 3pt shooting teams sometimes go completely cold and look atrocious out there.

So I don’t think it’s just simple maths. Some 2pt makes are And-1s and bring the same number of points as 3pt FGs too.

There are still different ways to construct a successful team. I’m sure we’ll see some great teams that don’t rely on 3pt shooters as much in the next few years. The Rockets are an example of a terrific shooting team that is not very good, while the Spurs take very few 3-pointers and are much better.

The league has its own equalising methods they dont tell you about which rewards teams based on things like entertainment, characters, superstars, likability and favors owed. Shaq said he got fouled on every possession. He only got calls when the league wanted him to though.

Also…does anyone else think that Donald Sterling was set up by the league so they could kick him out?

I wouldnt blame them….in fact I’d commend them since hes a bad person. Im just curious about the setup.

The league came out smelling like the dutchess of cambridge’s meow after that ‘scandal’. Its like Sterling had something on Stern….and once Stern was gone he had no leverage.

I’d be interested to know what GSW’s breakdowns compared to the Rockets were given the amount of lights out shooters they have.

Very good initial point by R377, teams have all sorts of performance monitors and if these people break down the maths they are probably telling Coach D’Antoni that the percentages of taking more 3 point shots give his team a better probability of scoring more points than taking and making more 2 point shots. Especially if this was against a team which doesn’t have a good 3 point shooting range but might be stronger on defence and in the paint than Houston.
