MJ FOR LIFE 23ParticipantI know everyone knows on this site that players list their heights with their shoes on. I guess it was a slow day for me and decided to post a comment on Youtube replying to someone that Nate Robinson was 5’7, not 5’11 as he stated. I got negged to hell with my comment and got e-mailed with statements saying he’s 5’9 and I’m a dumbass. I just told them to look up Draft Combine and just believe in what they believed since I got tired replying back lol. I guess that’s what I get for posting something on Youtube…

Mr. 19134ParticipantI know what you mean. People of most comment sections are beyond retarded on the internet. I just shake my head in disbelief wondering where this countries education system went wrong.

RafterParticipantI don’t waste my time on YouTube comments but like you I post a comment every now and then, which is the equivalent of getting a ball of string and then tying one end to a tooth while tying the other around a nearby door handle. It’s so painful! Don’t get me started with “fanboys” on that website…….just ignore the un-informed hate and laugh at how close minded they are. YouTube comments are pure comedy due to how absurd the general consensus is.

Chilbert arenasParticipantI’m ok with rounding up, but round up without shoes. I’m 5’11.5 without shoes and it says 6’0 on my drivers licence. Dwight came in at 6’9 flat at the combine and is listed at 6’11. Granted he was coming out of high school and had room to grow I don’t know if he did because he looks about the same height as Amare. On the other hand I would really like to see how tall Durant is these days because I believe he grew.

BigChamp12ParticipantA couple years ago I had the chance to see KD and Dwight side by side… From where I was looking KD had atleast an inch on Dwight. I was shocked. I dont know if Dwight was shorter than he’s actually listed, or if KD was really pushing 7ft.

Chilbert arenasParticipantIn 2005 in an article of Slam, (that I still have in my bedroom at my moms house from when I was in HS) , Nate Rob talks about how he just had a physical and he was 5’7.75. For years I’ve had a huge issue with the way the NBA does it’s listings. It’s so inconsistent when Mustafa Shakur somehow measures half inch difference at the draft beteween the ages of 21-22. Yes they play in shoes, but in more cases then not they don’t play in the shoes they do their measurments in because they add a half inch or so. Also we need to keep things consistent. In the late 90’s early 2000s they did measurments without shoes so when Tim Duncan is listed at 6’11 it means he’s actually 6’11 if not a little taller. Blake Griffin is 6’8.5 without shoes, 6’9.5 in shoes, so they round up to 6’10. So on paper Duncan is one inch taller than Blake, in reality The’s 3 inches taller. And who in their right mind actually thinks JJ Barea is 6’0???? The NFL doesn’t do these measurments in shoes, and they only do no-step verticals, true verticals, those guys always impress me so much more with their numbers.

bloodshyParticipantMeasuring in shoes at a combine is asinine and not demonstrative of actual height. Similarly, the NBA’s drills are not nearly as useful as what the NFL puts together. In terms of obtaining accurate metrics of physical capacity and limitation, the NFL owns the field. The NBA should take notes.
At the end of the day, measuring without shoes is really the only way to ensure consistency. There are just too many variables and ways of cheating the numbers when shoes are added into the mix.

doubledribblerParticipantI’m ok with guys being measured in shoes, I just think it needs to be across the board and guys should have to do some kind of light workout or drills in the same shoes immediately prior or after getting measured. That way guys won’t try to wear their high heels or tom cruise boots.
Personally, I think it is pointless to measure guys past the shoulders when measuring height in basketball.

Chilbert arenasParticipantBut why? There are too many variables in shoes, why not just keep these variables out of it like the NFL does. There’s nothing to gain by measuing them in shoes. I really think height is overrated in many senses anyway so why inflate these measurments. Álso when it comes to historical references it throws everything off, just like when Tyson Chandler tips a ball to a teammate it’s now considered a rebound. Could you imagine how many more rebounds Wilt and Russell would have had if that was the case back then.

doubledribblerParticipantBecause if you can play in them and are going to be playing in them, then that is your height on the court. That’s why I mentioned the whole thing about playing in the shoes you get measured in. That way guys can’t run and get the shoes with the biggest soles they can find. No one is going to risk an ankle injury in that scenario.
I understand the variable part, but to me it’s not a big deal if these are the shoes the guy is playing in.

Lafferty DanielParticipantI care more about wingspan, but think players should be measured without shoes on.

Chilbert arenasParticipantThey don’t play barefoot in the NFL and they didn’t play barefoot in the NBA 10 years ago. Keep things consistent.

BenchWarmerParticipantHow talls KD? He looks damn near 7feet tall. atleast 6’11 but slouched. Maybe its his thin frame that makes him appear that way.

Forte IVParticipantWhat he have learned about NBA heights is that a player is either shorter then their listed height, or taller then their listed height. It’s never spot on.

TallmanNYCParticipantBut they used to lie back in the day as well. John Starks was listed as 6′ 5″. Some guys I knew who went back into the locker room and got to hang out after a game said he was probably more like 6′ 2″.
I say bare feet is the only way to go. When someone who is a casual fan (like my GF) asks me how tall a guy is I give her the listed height and then mention it is with shoes. So she has to adjust that because she starts thinking, well how many inches taller than you is that? It is just silly. No reason at all not to use their true bare foot height.
And the league should weigh and measure them every year. That way we can find out if Dwight actually grew (which I don’t think he did, Pau is towering over him on the Lakers).0 - Posted on: Sat, 03/23/2013 - 7:36am #757080

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantOn a sidenote I’ve always kind of been curious as to when players starting being listed as their height with shoes. I mean during Wilt Chamberlain’s era, people nowadays constantly claim that he was playing against 6-6 white guys when the average height of centers in the leage in the mid 60s was actually almost 6-9. Does that mean in today’s game their average would be at least 6-10, and that Wilt would be listed at 7-3 and Bill Russell at 6-11?
