The NBA is finally doing something about the Duncan Dilemma.

The league will announce Wednesday a change to its All-Star ballot that will, for the first time, allow fans to vote for three undefined “frontcourt” players instead of having to vote for two power forwards and a center. With more and more teams playing smaller than in the past, the definition of “center” was becoming increasingly difficult — not to mention finding enough quality big men for whom to vote.

For years, for example, the Spurs have listed Tim Duncan as a power forward, even though everyone on earth knew he was their starting center. And so when it came to All-Star balloting, Duncan would take up a forward spot in a very crowded field of Western Conference stars instead of his logical spot in the middle. This was good for Duncan, who surely would have made his 13 All-Star teams anyway, but it often cost another forward a shot.

Thank God somebody else realizes that Tim Duncan is a Center and not a PF and Portland does the samething with Lamarcus Aldridge.

As long as the fans control who gets in and who doesn’t, guys like josh smith will still get snubbed

Fans only vote in the starters.  Josh Smith hasn’t been picked by the coaches.

I say as far as fan voting they should do away with all the positions.  It’s just a popularity vote anyways.  If the fans vote in 5 guards into the starting lineup, so what? It’s not like the game matters.

Interesting, you could in theory see 3 SF’s making the starting Line Up or even 3 C’s or say Shaq and Yao on the same starting 5 in the old days. I like this idea as you either have to define all positions or none although you could argue that an SF is often nearer to an SG than a PF on some teams.

I personally don’t really care for the change. I mean it’s ok I guess but I don’t think it is the right change. First off, I think the fans should not vote the starters in. I think the coaches, players and gm’s should. Let the fans vote 5 bench players or something. I’m tired of seeing that one guy get voted in that shouldn’t or over someone else. Like Yao beating out Shaq. Change needed to be made but  not sure this is the right move.

It would make more sense to vote for 3 perimeter players and 2 front court players. Regardless I doubt it makes much of a difference in fan voting, I wonder if it’ll be the same with coach voting for the bench.

best players in the league.  Get rid of the positions.  It’s an all star game that means nothing.

When Bynum & Howard switched conferences, alot of people thought they’ll be the starting centers on their conference all star teams for the next few years..This change hurts Bynum’s chance to be a starter..Becuz in the East,he has to compete against popular forwards like Lebron,Amare,Carmelo & Bosh….While Howard has always been among the top 5 overall vote getters, the last few seasons…

I wonder will this change also affect the Reserve centers?

This rule seems more fair to the players who are working to get selected to an All-Star game.  The Western conference is filled with stars at the power forward position.  Dirk, K-Love, Griffin, and Pau Gasol are just a few that we can name.  With Duncan being slated in as a power forward, that would take away an opportunity for either Dirk, Griffin, or Gasol, because i’m pretty sure that Kevin Love’s statline would get him in there.

I think this will be a good change for the game.

Now only if they could’ve made this rule during the Yao Ming era maybe he wouldn’t be selected as many times as he did.

I like it. In an all star game where the tempo is nuts, a player like Roy Hibbert will be out of place. Take him out and replace him with another wing or versatile power forward.

Though I’m not sure the bigs in the East are anywhere close to as deep as the bigs in the West.
