druneave3ParticipantIf Pops, Doc and Thibs are top 3 in no particular order, who would be the next several best coaches in the NBA?
What coach should be fired first?
What first year coach has impressed you the most?
Other than Jason Kidd, what coach would be the best player if they played right now?
Worst coach in the NBA? Mine is still Vinny Del Negro.

Prime TimeParticipant1. Fire Mike Woodson or Mike Brown. I feel like both the Cavs and Knicks should be playing better than they are with the rosters that they have.
2. Jeff Hornacek. It’s unbelievable what he has done with the the Phoenix Suns. Many believed that they were going to be one of the worst teams in the league and that they were tanking for a high lottery pick. Truthfully, Hornacek is currently my pick for coach of the year.
3. Jacque Vaughn simply because he’s a lot younger than most and played in the league. I was originally going to say Mark Jackson.
4. Worst coach that’s currently coaching? I don’t know, they all have different situations. I’ll just stick with the two that I said I would fire; Woodson and Brown.

Mr. HookShotParticipant1. Vogel is one of the best coaches. Don’t underestimate Spoelstra as well (yes he has his share of superstars but still). I also value Rick Carlistle very much, his teams play pretty hard most of the time as well (and he is winning with Calderon & Ellis in the backcourt).
2. …
3. Stevens, making the jump from CBB to NBA pretty seamlessly it seams
4. Other than Vaughn, maybe Monty Williams?
5. …

Jester87Participant1) Vogel is very good on defense, Carlisle is great on offense. Spoelstra is highly underrated, he was able to impose his ideas and mold a team loaded with superstars and that’s harder than what many people think. Also he’s the living proof that in order to create a system you need time and patience. The Heat didn’t play really well in their first season with LeBron. They improved each year with work. In a way losing against the Mavs helped his cause. Back then the Heat were basically playing a possession as LeBron’s team, another one as Wade’s team and once in a while as Bosh’s team. Now they play like a real team. I don’t know if he would’ve been able to convince those superstars without that failure.
2) nobody, I believe firing a coach during the season is almost always useless. If there’s a problem with your offense or defense, you’re not going to fix it, no matter how good the coach you’re hiring is. Teams barely practice during the season because they play a lot and travel even more, so how can you implement new schemes and become familiar with them? The only reason to fire a coach is if relations between him and the players are bad and he can’t really impose his authority over them. And even if that happens, it remains to be seen if hiring a new coach might be the solution, especially coaches with short contracts are in a very weak position.
3) A lot of good young coaches. I like Budenholzer a lot, the Hawks move the ball really well, play fundementally sound basketball even though they lack great talent. Hornacek is also doing a great job, also he’s been able to build a team that has been above average on both sides of the court, that’s really remarkable. I like what Brad Stevens is doing, he’s not winning games, the Celtics just aren’t good enough, but they’ve had streaks of good basketball and mostly lose because they lack talent, rarely because they lack organization on the court. Steve Clifford is doing a terrific job with Charlotte’s defense.
4) I think Byron Scott has had better results than he deserved considering his knowledge of the game. I don’t know if he’s the worse, but I don’t think he’s that good.

Jco4ParticipantVogel and Spoelstra are the next best 2 by far however Brooks with OKC has also been impressive.
First firing? One of: Mike Brown, Rick Adelman or Mike D’antoni. I just don’t like any of those guys or what they do for their teams.
Everyone’s already said Hornacek, the Suns have been amazing.
I’d love to see Mark Jackson back out there.
As a Clippers fan I have to agree with OP worst coach was definitely Vinny Del Negro.0 - Posted on: Tue, 01/28/2014 - 4:17am #865767
