TyroberParticipantI have been playing poker for years and have been quite successful with it so I have always been a bit of a gambler. I started playing poker a lot in 2010 and won over 20k in my first 5 months and haven’t looked back. I never got into betting sports because I saw so many people lose at it, but I have been betting some NFL games this year and have made a very small profit which is kinda nice since I really had no idea what I was doing to begin with, but my question to you guys do you bet any NBA games and what advice do you have?
I think Oladipo will win rookie and right now that is only paying 3-1 and it just seems a little too wide open to bet any ROY right now. LeBron James is currently a +125 or 5/4 favorite to win the MVP which is a ridiculous bet imo. Kevin Durant at 4-1 seems like a solid bet as well as Chris Paul at 12-1. Clippers have have a good team this year and it seems like the voters will get tired of voting for LeBron because they have to eventually right?
Championship odds for the Pacers are at 14-1 which seems like a solid bet. Chicagos at 10-1, Thunder at 7-1, Knicks at 35-1. HEAT are the favorites at 13/5.
Like I said I am new to sports gambling, but poker has been very very good to me so I wanted to get my feet wet and try it out. I am using sportsbook odds btw.

GrandmamaParticipantYou sound a lot like me, been playing poker for a while (I’ve done pretty well) and am an avid bettor. Betting the NBA is tough. Generally I don’t bet many basketball games, as there are many things that happen that can change the outcome. My advice is never bet the spread, always bet money lines. I feel those are the safest bets, as it’s much easier to bet a team to strictly win versus having to cover a spread. Maybe parlay two or three money lines a night to get a better payout. I’ve also teased a lot of games before, I’m a sucker for teasers when it comes to football.
For futures bets, if you’re getting 13-5 on the Heat I’d bet that. On Bovada where I gamble, they are only 2-1. And the Bulls are only 7-1. As far as MVP betting goes, I wouldn’t bet anyone other than James, Durant, and Rose. Something you could do with those lines is hedge. Bet both Rose and Durant, however much, and then bet James as much as it takes to break even if he ends up winning. I did that with the NCAA football champion. I bet Oregon, Ohio St., and Florida St., then hedged to break even with Alabama.
Like I said though, betting NBA games is tough. Stick with money lines. Maybe keep track of games and if you’d bet certain spreads, and if you’re covering those then you can dabble on the spreads.

This season I played Zeller at 2000, Olynk at 1500. Bennett at 1800, Mclemore at 1200, McCollum at 1200 and Oladipo at 475.

ropeParticipantSecond road game, especially if the team had a free night in Chicago. It is hard for most teams to accomplish a lot in that scenario.

ChoppyParticipantI wouldn’t call myself a hard core gambler but I do like having a few bets on sports every now and then. What I like to do is what Grandmama suggested. I don’t know if the terminology is the same in the US as it is in Australia but ours is called a multiplier or multi. I try and get three or four “sure things” and bet that they will ALL win in one bet, not separate. That way the odds multiply.
For example, if Miami is playing the bobcats, Indiana is playing philly and OKC is playing Phoenix, bet that Miami, Indiana and OKC will win. Gets you much better odds at a lower risk. Of course upsets will happen but I win more often than not with this method.

By the way, what are the odds for Rose to win MVP? Lebron is obviously the favorite, but voter fatigue could hurt him this year. Also, Rose should be more than healthy and motivated. Even if Chicago can’t stay healthy this year, it would not be a surprise if they finished the best record in the east or top record overall.

I tend to gamble only on horse racing and bet to a formula of looking for likely winning favourites at decent odds, my strike rate is about 85% but the returns are not huge even when I bet heavily.
