I know this question requires some thought. How fitting for such a title. If there were an NBA all IQ team who would be on your squad? If there were a top 500 ranking I would feel comfortable ranking Javale McGee at 500 and JR Smith at a close 499th.

C – Marc Gasol. Best vision and passing ability of any C. Always seems to make the right play.
PF – Tim Duncan. One of the smartest players in NBA history.
SF – LeBron James. Funny how he used to get flack for passing to the open man instead of shooting.
SG – Andre Iguodala. This was a tough one, but there’s not a single SG out there that stands out as “heady,” except for AI.
PG – Steph Curry. Chris Paul needs to shoot more.

Good list but you got to have kobe as the SG.

im not even a fan of his but he by far is the highest iq SG in the lg.

side note the whole spurs team has to be in the top 50 lol

Kobe’s game winning shot percentage (25%) begs to differ. Pass the ball, man!

Most of the players I picked ended up being near the top of their position, which is natural because such a big part of having a successful game is having a high basketball IQ.

CN – Al Jefferson – One of the last of the big old school back you down centers, tough choice between him and Gasol but I give him the go experience wise.

PF – Tim Duncan – Obvious.

SF – Lebron James – Obvious but also there arent many SF’s to choose from.

SG – Kobe Bryant – Again obvious but also again there arent many other SG’s to choose from and no one can deny Kobes feel and knowledge of the game.

PG – Tony Parker – Tough between him and Chris Paul but he runs one of the most efficient offenses of all time perfectly.

6 Man – Manu Ginobili – Probably the only other high basketball IQ SG in the league. Most of the other talented SG’s are young and havent even fully developed their games yet.

    Bench –

Marc Gasol – Definitely high IQ, obvious the way hes able to share the ball from the big man position and have one of the best defensive big man games despite not being very athletic.

Dirk Nowitzki – Comes from experience but he was always one of the high IQ players in the league even at a younger age.

Kevin Love – So multifacted and talented despite being about as athletic as a sloth. Basketball IQ is what makes him stand out from so many other similarly athletic players.

Kevin Durant – Needed another wing player and Durant is an easy choice. Most of the other talented SF’s in the league are very inefficient players and efficiency definitely speaks towards a high basketball IQ.

Chris Paul – Could easily swap in as the starting point guard. Likely one of the smartest players in the league.

Stephen Curry – Studies tendencies and watches film as much as anyone. Skill set is amazing and always seems to have a natural adaptation to whos on the floor and when on both teams. Young but impressive.

    Just Missed –

    Lamarcus Aldridge(too many PF’s), Pau Gasol(too many PF’s), Paul Pierce(so close), Goran Dragic(too many PG’s), Steve Nash(too old to make a difference).

I wouldnt mind a lowest basketball IQ thread next…

You’re right. Bargnani, Ricky Rubio, and Darko would smile ear to ear if anyone ever considered them “fundamentally sound.” The rest of us would be laughing.

oldheads steve nash and kg have always been known for their court smarts..but guys like kobe & rondo basketball iqs havent gotten much respect…

u have to put cp3 as the smartest pg right now..deandre jordan owes him a portion of his paycheck for the way he’s helped to make him a better player..according to 82games.com, when cp3 is on the court the clippers offensive rating (points per 100 poss.) they are a net +11.9..

CP3 sprang to mind when I first saw the thread title, Ray Allen would be in the consideration if he played on. Iggy is another name who came to mind.

For the bigs I’ll throw in Nene as a wildcard as I recall John Wall saying what a difference it made to have a big with a good basketball IQ after the Wizards had flipped McGee for him.

i associate guys with limited physical attributes that can be key contributers as having high bball iqs.  here’s my under the radar role player list.

steve blake – takes care of the ball, knows how to get open, makes big shots.

josh mcroberts – smooth passing big with good understanding of the game and where to be.

boris diaw – undersized pf that can pass and use his body to play good defense.

paul milsap – another undersized guy that knows how to score in the post and rebound despite height issues.

kyle korver – the guy just knows where to be for the open jay.  on d, he’s getting much better despite not being a great athlete.

I disagree that high iq is generalized to label low ceiling athletes.but you are correct there are some players who can really play the game but also who are pretty poor defenders because of their lack of athleticism and it kills their stock.

fyi;every allstar in the league today has a very high basketball iq. I challenge you to name one that doesnt.

But to your point look at the past few drafts at undrafted players for example… matthew dellevedova is one of those high bbiq players that didnt get drafted, not because he can’t play but because he was under valued coming out of st.mary’s due to poor competition. he is definietly better than most of the 2nd round picks in 2013. Sure he’s never going to be a high flying dunker or the face of a franchise, and yes he has a high bb iq and got playing time last year because of it,above players with better athleticism who wont last if they don’t work as hard as these kids like "Delly" does.

    My line up:

    SG- Ray Allen

    SF- Luol Deng

    PF- Tim Duncan

    C- Mark Gasol

I think Kobe and LeBron are  no brainers so left them off.
