Every draft, there are a few prospects from big schools that are seen as lottery/first round prospects that simply do not have the skillset to make the transition to the league (Joe Alexander, Julian Wright). There are also a few prospects that weren’t even on the NBA draft radar in a significant way that end up being great role players in the league (Jeremy Lin, Danny Green). Here are my suggestions for players who end up in these categories that will likely be in the next few drafts;

BUST Candidates:
Marcus Lee
Chris Walker
Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
Montrezl Harrell
Amida Brimah

SURPRISE Candidates:
Georges Niang
Jarrod Uthoff
Larry Nance Jr.
D’Angelo Harrison
Jonathan Holmes

 There is still time for those players to be projected as lottery picks  and be described  as future all stars and fall back to being close to undrafted before the draft and then again have better careers than some lottery picks.

I hate to project players as busts this early, particularly with so little to evaluate them on. For example, I can honestly say I have no idea how good someone like Kelly oubre will be in 5 yrs. He has shown some flashes, but he’s all potential and upside at this point. 

With that being said, I’d be very nervous if my team drafted Myles turner. While I love his shooting touch for a player his size, he just moves so awkwardly on the court and doesn’t appear to have a very solid foundation. To me, this screams potential for knee and back problems when dealing with the speed and strength of the NBA game. Maybe it’s possible that he is still just growing into his body and this can be corrected with strength training but it would definitely give me cause for concern if I were a scout or gm.

As far as potential surprises, I could see someone like rakeem Christmas having a pretty good NBA career even though he’s kind of a late bloomer and not projected right now as a first rounder. Also, I could see Kevin pangos having a decent career as a back up pg in the Steve Blake mold. Smart, heady players who rarely turn the ball over and are knock down shooters have a way of sticking around the league for a long time.

I can see Marcus Lee being a bust. Me being a UK fan I was hoping he could turn the corner and be a enforcer on the defensive end. It doesn’t look like that’s going to happen with Cal recruiting over you every year. Its either FIO or transfer.

Chris Walker and Brimah Will defiantly be end of the bench guys. Brimah might have a higher chance of getting run in the NBA because of his height. Walker no chance!!!! Dudes game sucks. He just bullied people around in high school that’s why he scored so much.

Harrell and Jefferson I think will be nice stretch 4 guys for people. Like a Taj Gibson type. Spread the court, nice pick and pop guys with a lot of athletic ability and good range.

 Marcus Lee is still a work in progress…no he wasn’t a one and done but its a good thng that guys have the option to stay 3 or 4 years to develop their games…if he can learn how to time his blocks better and rebound with 2 hands consistently that will bring his game to a whole nother level.

What do you think about Jordan Mickey, JoeWolf (or anybody else). I feel like Christmas’ name has popped up a few times on this board but I don’t really see what seperates him from someone like Mickey. Mickey does alot of the same things, IMO plays with more energy and is two and a half years younger. How would you compare the two?

 I like Mickey. He is significantly undersized ( around 6’7” ) but he’s got a great wingspan, and he’s obvioiusly a very effective shot blocker. I don’t think Jordan will declare this year, but there’s a chance he could cash out after a great sophomore season.

They’re both shooting over 40% on their 2 point jumpers ( which is great for a college PF ). I don’t think the 2” Mickey gives up is a huge deal, when comparing him to Christmas because Jordan is a better shot blocker, and more used to playing man to man at a younger age. 

I think Mickey could carve out a role as an undersized grinder much like Jason Maxiell has done over the years. If he were to declare this season, I’d be thrilled to pull the trigger on him in the late 1st or early 2nd round.
