What is the exact meaning of a #2? We have #2 scoring option, playmaking option etc. But to me, a number 2 option can be a superstar who is not a franchise player.

IMO, The best #2 option is currently a #1. Chris Bosh is the best superstar who’s not a Franchise player. Pau Gasol is the best #2 option who is in the role of a #2.

A second option , a player on the team….not including the superstar or best player of the team, that takes the burden off the best player on your team, he can to alot of things but not really on a elite level

I believe we had a discussion like this earlier. You are right about Bosh, I don’t think he can be the Number 1 Guy and Gasol was in Memphis, but didn’t get it done and now he makes the perfect #2 option.

I think Rudy Gay will be the best #2 in a year or two… I also think that Russell Westbrook is going to be a stellar #2.

As for right now: Chauncey Billups as the #2 for Melo, although in reality, I think Chauncey is the best/most valuable player on that team

More #2’s now that I think about it… LaMarcus, Rashard Lewis, Joe Johnson (though he’s a #1 on his team), Amare, Michael Redd (also a #1), Ray Allen…..

I think it’s a little shortsighted to say all rashard lewis can do is shoot… I think shooting is definitely his best skill by far, but to say that he doesn’t do anything else is not fair to the guy. He (mostly his length) was a big part of the Magic’s team defense being so good and he grabbed his share of rebounds. He is definitely an EXCEPTIONAL shooter though

David West and Pau Gasol are the best no.2 options in the NBA. We had this discussion the other day.

To me a No.2 guy should be able to:

1.)Pick up the slack CONSISTENLY, if the main guy is either having an off-game, is injured etc…
2.) Be able to play a role that is very important to the team and gives the a great chance of winning (3 point shooting, perimeter defense, interior D, playmaking skills).
3.)They should not take shots from the main guy or other teammates that need touches.

If they play with these things, you have the perfect No. 2 option

Rashard definitely had some very clutch shots in the playoffs too. He is the guy who can burn you if you focus too much on stopping the #1 guy.

I think a #2 is the teams second playmaking/scoring option, thus I don’t think you can call Bosh a #2 since he is the primary option for his team. I don’t think their is any argument that he wouldn’t make a great #2 on another team, but if we say that we could argue Tim Duncan would be the best #2 if he played for the Heat or Chris Paul would be the best #2 if he played for the Cavs.

Current Great #2’s would be Gasol, Pierce, Billups, Carter/Lewis (who will be the #2 in Orlando now?)

But I agree Gasol is probably the best currently

I think the best number 2 player depends on who the #1 guy is. The #2 guy should really make life easier for the #1 guy. He should COMPLEMENT the #1’s skill set.

In Dwight’s case, the perfect #2 is/are shooters to spread the floor and make it harder to double him. Also someone who can feed him in the post.

For CP3, it’s a guy who can run the pick and pop/roll so he needs to be able to hit the mid range jumper, and be able to get up for the alley oop.

For Kobe, it’s someone who doesn’t need the spotlight on him because Kobe always wants it to be about him. that’s why gasol is such a good sidekick for him~ because he doesn’t need a whole lot of attention.

I’m trying to think of who a good #2 for LeBron is, but I donno… I guess a shooter to unclog the lane? I’d like to see Michael Redd as a Cav~ they’d be a tough duo to stop
