stepback3ParticipantHow come the regular season MVP hasn’t one the title since Tim Duncan in 02-03?

651TwolvesParticipantmaybe because basketball is a team game and individual success doesn’t directly translate to a title. And Lebron helped prove this year that you can only win an MVP if you are far and away the best player on your team. I think Most Valuable Player should be given to the best player, not the player who is most valuable to their team.
but props to Rose and the Bulls for a hardfought series and a great season

mikeyvthedonParticipantIt is what it is, and it is tending to be based on a combination of record and story. That being said, I feel Rose was a very deserving recipient, and it is after all an award for the regular season. But, it still seemed thoroughly convincing that LeBron James was the best player in basketball, and honestly the biggest hit to his MVP candidacy was the other players he played with, which just seems to hold little validity. Nonetheless, rings are the real thing that matter and if you want to be amongst the top 10 players to have ever played the game, all of them have at least one. LeBron already has 2 MVP’s, and as crazy as this may be, that will probably lead to him being overlooked for the award in the future, just as Michael Jordan was. The fact that Kobe and Shaq, two players who in my mind are definitely in the top 10 of all-time, only have one a piece just shows you that winning MVP is an honor, but being a major part in winning (in general and championships) is what cements ones legacy as a player.

nath09ParticipantI guess the people who judge the MVP look at it like this…. what would that team be like without that player..the Cavs answered that thi season.
As for Duncan, the Spurs have always had that even roster with about 7 guys with the same ability so Duncan stands out and theyve got the supporting cast.
Shaq.. well Shaq is Shaq. enough said.
To put it in different words to the posts above once you’ve won the MVP people will judge you at a higher level, and sometimes the truley great ones like Shaq and Duncan work out how to get their teams a ring even if it sacrifices their appeal to MVP judges. Thats the most logical way I can see the reason for this.
I think maybe the best example might be an Iverson. All the skill and talent in the world but it was all about Iverson until the day he left the NBA.
