Am I the only fan who likes a guy that’s good at all the intangibles of the game, but not just great at one skill? I think every team with a ball dominant player needs this guy. All-around good feel for the game, not a worldbeater, but can contribute all over the box sheet. These players come in the form of:

James Harden- SG, OKC- Harden is a nifty left hander with an old man game. He isn’t the most athletic, but will get pass you off the dribble and throw it down in a second. Doesn’t have playground handles, but nifty moves will free him up driving lanes and space for pull-ups. Speaking of his jumper, it isn’t pure like a Ray Allen, but it does the trick  He is also comfortable bringing the ball up court and setting it up in the half court. Guy has underrated passing ability. This year I seen him throw an underhand scoop pass on a fastbreak pass a Dallas defender like it was nothing. JH13 will also defend with willingness as well and hit the boards. He has a BRIGHT future in the league. Maybe not an all-star, but a GREAT contributor to an elite team for years to come.

    Can you name any others??

I dont know how much he will evolve from the versitile role player, but I was very impressed by Landry Field ability to impact various parts of the game. His lateral quickness is bleow average, and he isnt an assist passer, but he a good defender, rebounder, decent shooter (when hes confident) and make good plays.

Richard Jefferson in his prime was also very versitile, threatening 20-7-4 when he was healthy.

The funny thing is that Harden has always had similiar descriptions but he is in fact one of the most athletic SGs out there. I also think he will make an All-Star game or two. But for the most part I agree with you, every contending team does need a j@ck-of-all-trades role player. The Spurs have Manu Ginobili, the Lakers Lamar Odom, the Mavs Shawn Marion, the Bulls have Luol Deng.

When the Magic made the Finals a few years ago, Hedo Turkoglu was that guy for us. Missing a glue player like that (even though we got him back he’s not the same anymore) is part of the reason we struggled so much this past season.

Edit: apparently j@ck-of-trades doesn’t get past this site’s censors, lol

I wish I could start reeling off the names of these type of guys but its difficult. When I think of Mr Intangible, Scottie Pippen immediately comes to mind.  These players are rare and most of the time highly underrated.

The league is filled with specialist nowadays and the guys who set themselves apart by being Mr Intangble or Mr Perfect because they do everything well are usually superstars. Harden has the potential to be one of those guys.

Andre Iguodala comes to mind; glue guy, can do everything, would be a perfect teammate for a Dwyane Wade or Kobe Bryant type SG.

I firmly believe Gordon Hayward will be just that type of player. He’s extremely well-rounded, but not dominant in any one category. A smart, savvy, fundamental, balanced player with solid athleticism, scoring and shooting ability, ballhandling, rebounding, passing, etc. Just solid. When Ty Corbin gave him 35 minutes a night at the end of the year, he provided very complete stat lines and definitely showed an ability to impact a game in a myriad of ways.

Bill Self said during the winter that Marcus Morris was the most well rounded player he’s ever coached.  He said that he wasn’t going to completely wow you with one aspect of his game, but all the pieces put together made for a very good, well balanced player.

I think Morris could develop into a very solid glue guy at an NBA level ( and starter at that), who can do anything needed from pass, shoot, handle the ball and play D.

Joe Johnson, Brandon Roy, Manu Ginobli, Andre Iguadala

Those are the best in the game right now at being able to do everything…

Roy not so much anymore but the others…

     ^^^+1.

Realistically, a guy like Pau Gasol is somewhat of  a jack of all trades as well. His post game is top notch but the fact that he gets bullied so easily takes a lot of his post game away. If you ask me, jack of all trades types, are really the very best second options to true superstars. It’s why Pippen and Gasol are the best Robins of all time. (unless you’re someone who counts Kobe with Shaq as a Robin.)

Marquis Daniels and Josh Howard used to be the types of guys who could do some of everything. Daniels even used to be able to play some PG.

You have guys like Lamar Odom, Andre Iguodala (even though he’s a below average shooter probably), Stephen Jackson, Mike Miller used to be a Swiss army knife before he started to become a spot-up shooting role player. Brandon Roy was an outstanding scorer but he was a good all-around player too.

Turkoglu, Dunleavey, and Luke Walton when healthy(though like Iggy is below average shooter and hasn’t been healthy since like 07-08)

I’d argue that Pierce was/still is a lot like that. He still is able to do a bit of everything- he’s just taken on much more of a cold-blooded scorer’s mentality when Allen and Garnett joined the team.
