Just saw an article about Anthony Morrow was forced to choose a new jersey number for the Bulls, he originally selected Derrick Rose’s old number #1 in which he suited up – but didn’t play – against the Suns. He received angry comments from the fans, just like MCW got earlier for the same thing, and the harsh comments from multiple forums leads to a number change.
That’s maybe not a big deal, but my question is why couldn’t Morrow, MCW or any other player wore that #1?
As Rose is still irrationally popular (compared to his production) and I know here’s a lot of Rose fans also and he got 338.000 votes for ASG (where he had no business). I don’t think he has that type of legacy to handle his jersey already like a retired one in Chicago.
He was a very talented player, but injury robbed almost everything what’s separated him from other guards. He can’t shoot, not a distriubtor and isn’t a Gary Payton like defender.
I just checked his career stats, and was really surprised to see he had only 2.5 decent seasons, where he averaged over 17 points with acceptable shooting % and over 5 assists and that resulted into an easy first round exit and an almost sweep in ECF.
The NBA hype machine is a very, very powerfull thing… He’s a one time MVP and his career could’ve gone in a much different way but that just didn’t happened. Those fans shoult let that Rose dream go away, just like the front office did shipping him to NYC.
In my mind he shouldn’t be treated as MJ or any other Bulls legend because he was much much more of a promise than THE thing.
I think Magic fans isn’t yelling at anyone who wants to wear Penny’s jersey and the two case is very similar.

Rose made his 1st all star averaging 20.3 per 36 PPG. This year he is averging 19.7. He would have been an all star if it wasn’t such a strong league for PGs right now. If his number wasn’t so popular in the first place then the fans would have a point.

Yes, and if the league’s leading scorer averages 8.3 ppg, he would be mvp again… He isn’t at an All Star level at this point, that’s out of question, though we could compare his per 36 stats to an 1948 All Star player also, in fact he’s nowhere close to be an All Star today. Sad or not it’s true.

There is no reason why #1 should be restricted in any way for Bulls players. He was our hometown guy, #1 overal pick and our hope to win our first non-MJ championship. I can see why people still root for him. Even I am hoping he turns a corner and find a way to play at a "top 10 PG" level again. I’m doubtful he will, but I still want him to be successful. Watching him the last 2-3 years has been painful. He isn’t even playing at a starters level IMO.

The Bulls screwed him over multiple times, releasing medical reports that should be private and throwing him under the bus in the media.

But then his brother could come back and cause all kinds of drama, whining and complaining. Then Rose refused to help the Bulls organization bring in any top level FA. Rose is a willing passer and (at that time) was someone that other stars were open to playing with. I’m sure a little effort on his part would of gone a long way with those free agents. Plus his max contract kept us stuck from any real moves while he sat out most of those seasons.

Rose was at his best when he was attacking the lane with layups and trying to dunk on people. When he was stopped he would hit those 5-8 ft floaters that he was so damn good at. BUT post inury he stopped attacking as much and now shoots way too many long jumpers and 3’s which have always been his worst offensive trait.

Watching a gifted athlete like Rose jacking up back shots and avoiding contact like an old man at the Y is just sad…

I hope Morrow doesn’t back down. Chicago fans need to accept reality that D-Rose is not longer a Bull and that D-Rose is no longer the MVP Rose we saw. I openly admit I was on his side in the Rose vs Westbrook debates years ago. Now one looks like the reincarnation of The Big O and the other looks like…. this.

Comparing a 1948 all star to a 2017 all star is completly different than a 2010 all star and 2017 all star nice Mr Fantastic reach though

Teams will always retire a jersey for a long serving popular player or will steer players away from wearing it. The Bulls obviously don’t have an issue with Morrow wearing it or they would have not given him the chance to wear it.

I wonder what would have happened if D-Rose and say D-Wade had happened to wear the same number or D-Wade had taken that jersey. I’d have guessed there would have been little said as D-Wade is a legend whilst Morrow is merely a shooting role player.

Has a top player ever jumped ship and then his former team have possibly given his number to a much lesser player or a 10 day contract guy to maybe have a dig.

Two other players numbers retired by the Bulls similar and/or (in Jerry Sloan’s case) worse than Derrick Rose.   It doesn’t make sense that they wouldn’t retire his jersey number considering he was a 3 time All-Star and 1 time MVP.   Regardless of how or why he exited the team without sufficient success in the playoffs, I would think he earned his jersey to be retired if other players don’t have the resume of his but have retired numbers.
