SpartanGloryParticipant50 Games into the season Cheeks has been fired. Known throughout his career as being a "players coach", he seemed like a bad fit from the get-go. I wonder what name Dumars pulls out of a hat to replace him. We definitely need a tough minded coach that can instill some discipline in this team on both offense and defense.

Sotos14ParticipantI love how they waited for the Pistons to actually win back to back games rather convincingly. Josh Smith and Brandon Jennigns have both played really well last 10 games or so as well. I still like the decision but this organization’s timing is baffling. Hopefully Joe Dumars is next.

Crazy to think these players probably found out via the media rather than the organization. Another thing I noticed, Joe D will be given a chance to replace his 8th HC hire. If that doesn’t tell Gores Joe D is a huge piece of the problem nothing will. Fire Joe D!

SpartanGloryParticipantJoe Dumars is a joke. Probably told everyone that their jobs were secure, and then blind sided them. I think this was the right move since it was a bad hiring to begin with, but since it was a bad hiring to begin with, this all lies on Joe D.

hoopscopParticipantWith John Hammond the worst executive in the league. As for Cheeks, in Philly and Px he was known to be totally overmatched and lazy. Why should You want to hire him?

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantMo Cheeks always seemed like a good guy but Detroit and CLeveland are a mess. What’s amazing is that Jason Kidd still has a job. The Nets are improving but are certainly more of a dissappointment than Detroit.
Josh Smith’s mother could fire hired as the coach and she wouldn’t be able to stop the Josh Smith face up, pull up long 2. Nobody can stop him, in the 3rd quater of that Denver game yesterday he took one then waited a possession and took another, both misses one on a fast break. Meanwhile JJ Hickson after taking a long 2 took two short hooks in Smith mug and hit. Next D possession Smith takes another one, another miss. Then next possession he tries vigorously to post up 19 feet from the basket and Stuckey ignores him an dpasses the G Monroe who drives and dunks on Mozgov. After this Smith realizes shorter shots are better and sinks two 5 foot hooks from the left block in the next 2 minutes.
The only person in the entire NBA with the leadership capabilities (either coach or player) that could get to Josh Smith is Chris Paul or Greg Popovich.

RUDEBOY_Participant8 Head Coaches and soon to be 9 during his 14 year tenure as Team President….
So they owe Cheeks the remaining years of his contract,I think they’re paying Lawrence Frank 4 million dollars for this season and will be paying a new coach, unless they hire 1 of Cheeks assisants……
Yeah Dumars brought a title to the city in 2004..But its Time for Dumars to GO!!

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantThe Pistons do seem like they are getting better and have played better more recently as was said above so the timing is weird. Maybe somebody was getting fired this week and Joe struck first so he could keep his job. There no way a team GM fires a coach mid season then the owners says fire the GM and have the whole organization influx at the same time.
Thanks for keeping it classy Joey D.

TyroberParticipantThey were set up to fail. I don’t think anyone could have this team winning with Jennings at a PG and Smith as a SF. Good luck to whoever gets the next HC job for them, but the team can’t win as constructed.

HitsterParticipantLionel Hollins and George Karl are the logical choices. Teams in contention would be very reluctant to release a top assistant at this stage of the season. Doug Collins would install defence into them but with his reluctance to play a lot of young guys would he fit there.
John Loyer has been appointed as interim coach and has a lot of experience as an assistant so would be a safe pair of hands to run the team until the summer when Detroit can look at all options. With Henry Bibby also there they have a couple of experienced guys and Sheed might take on a bigger role also.
The thought of Sheed as a Head Coach would be fun if nothing else and Chauny Billups was a great on court leader at his peak and is often talked about as a future Head Coach. But to give a novice the role of turning around a talented but underachiving team would be a big ask. However if the Pistons did want to consider one of them get them involved for the rest of the season to see if they have got what it takes.
Also Dumars own position must come under scrutiny, he is a Detroit legend and has lucked on some good draft picks in recent years, took a team to 5 successive Conference Finals and won the title. But the title win was a decade ago, they have had 5 seasons likely to be 6 with a losing season, add in some dodgy FA moves, drafting Darko etc so the time for him to move on may be now.
Their owner Tom Gores is obviously a very astute businessman to have built up a $2.5 million plus fortune so he will have to have a long hard think of how the team should go forward.
Joe Dumars is a legend in Detroit having served the franchise for nearly 29 years as player and Front Office Executive, I’m sure he is very passionate about the Pistons and whilst it would be harsh for him to be cast aside totally. I do think that Tom Gores does need to at least find Dumars another position within the franchise and get in a younger more pro-active GM.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantThey need to find a way to get rid of Josh Smith (they shouldn’t have signed him in the first place) and bring in Lionel Hollins. Hollins would turn Drummond into a DPOY candidate within the next 2 seasons.
This team needs an overhaul and the sad thing is, they were headed on the right track before bringing in Jennings and Smith. They should have just let Knight go for pennies on the dollar to another team and acquire a draft pick, then continued to build through the draft, especially in a draft as loaded as this one.
Is anyone willing to take Josh Smith? The Rockets were willing to bring him in during the off-season but with Terrence Jones coming of age and Chandler Parsons needing a new contract soon, they shouldn’t go anywhere near that trainwreck.
Would the Bulls be interested in Josh Smith? They can probably trade away Boozer’s expiring deal, a draft pick, and another player getting paid under 2mil a year (Shengelia, Augustin, or Snell) and get Josh Smith in return.
They’ll be much more athletic and defensive with a frontcourt featuring Noah-Smith/Gibson-Butler, just a thought.

The Bulls will probably amnesty Boozer because they don’t want to pay the luxury tax and Boozer has only one year remaining in his deal. Why would they trade him for J-Smoove, whose contract last forever? I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t do that even without having to throw in anything else, let alone a first round pick or a cheap young promising player like Snell.

fundamentalsforfunParticipantthis firing comes down to a poor signing in Josh Smith and as a result a complete lack of a wing player who can shoot for the pistons. Singler has played somewhat respectably of late but they still desperately need another player to spread the floor. the pistons would have been better off keping Knight (who has been doing very well over the last few games) and signing a couple of wing players, who can shot and play some D, and a reliable back-up center. KCP seems like he’ll be a relatively good pro but needs some seasoning. The Pistons would have been far better off developing their young players and trying to get back that top 8 protected pick.

jaycee24ParticipantEverything Joe Dumars does seems to be a panic move…we have a half decent SF so pass on Carmelo Anthony for a Serbian nobody had even heard of….our championship team ages so he panics and pays top dollar in a very weak free agency pool…our coaches have issues with players plfttt gone! ….the owner wants us to make the playoffs so we fire the coach who actually showed some improvement and team cohesion in Frank to hire a coach who hasn’t been a successful head coach since Rasheed was in Portland…and we sign a PF to play SF then trade 2 young promising players for a shaky player in Jennings with a shaky upside…I’ve never understood Joe’s line of thinking it’s like he’s a contrarian

I really hope Hollins gets the call, he’s perfect for Drummond and will sort out Smith (I hope).

Sharp ShooterParticipantPistons need a player that can get in their a s s e s…Joe d has hired too many soft spoken head coaches…Frank, Curry, Kuester, Saunders and Cheeks are all coaches who do not speak up for their team as well. As a player you would want a coach to be in your ear when you do something bad, or stick up for your team when the refs are against you. Larry was a perfect example, he would yell at his team in time outs, get animated with the ref and get a tech even if he was for the hell of it…he knew that would get his team charged up. He would bench you and let you know too. He pushed his team to the limit and got the best out of them. Cheeks did not do that. He was too soft spoken, and not animated. Also he butted head with most of the players, so it was only a matter of time.
As for coaches, I believe like Lambieer, Hollins. As much as im intrigued with Wallace, I would like to continue grooming him in that asst. coach role (and Summer league coach) until he’s ready for prime time (when the pistons actually get rid of the dead weight, and get an Identity)

r377ParticipantLaimbeer – I can’t work out why he has not a head coaching gig ? Of course I am biased as he is my all time favourite player.
The guy knows the ins and outs of the game, he is mentally strong and won’t take any b.s from any player. He has won WNBA titles as a coach.
He has great bball IQ – how else can you make it in the league (let alone be an all-star and lead the league in rebounding) with a two inch vert leap and the speed and athleticism of a tortoise……

They want Lionel Hollins though, clearly. They need to trade Josh Smith though, he doesnt really seem smart enough to mesh with the other younger guys on the team. And he messes up my fantasy basketball team sometimes.
