The Denver Nuggets announced today that they have hired Michael Malone as their new head coach. Per team policy, the terms of the contract were not announced.

So Denver fires George Karl, who eventually goes to Sacramento to replace Michael Malone, and then Denver hires Michael Malone to replace the guy who replaced George Karl.

Denver does not exactly come out of this looking brilliant.

Mike Malone is a good fit, should work well with Nurkic.

So was that report on Pete D’Alessandro being the main culprit in the firing of Mike Malone a lie or did they just make up in the last week?

Also, you have this geographic advantage and a roster that is geared towards playing an up-tempo pace and you hire Mike Malone?

One of the things Kings owner Vivek Ranadive was criticized for was that he hired a coach (Mike Malone) before he hired a GM (D’Alessandro). Usually you get a GM and he picks the coach he wants. So, it was noted that Malone wasn’t really D’Alessandro’s guy, and that contributed to the firing a bit. It might have been overblown, but there is a possibility that it could’ve been a factor.

So when I heard Denver re-hired D’Alessandro and then Malone, I was rather surprised because I thought that perhaps there might be some bad blood between the two. But turns out that they hired D’Alessandro to be the Senior Vice President of Business and Team Operations and not a GM/assistant GM position, so it seems unlikely he had much say in the hiring of Malone.

Now you can throw Thibs, Brooks, and Jackson in that group of winning coaches who got canned when there teams were doing well.  Now, it worked out for Golden State, but it seems like a stupid trend.  On top of that, they are being replaced with unproven coaches, it doesn’t make sense.  Isn’t your goal as a team to win games?

Who’s to say those teams were winning in spite of their coach? I’m fine with the A-to-B-to-C strategy in coaching. You hire a coach (A) and that coach grows with the team (B) and if that coach reaches a ceiling due to flaws in their approach, you correct them (C) by hiring another if they can’t do it themselves. Now, whether or not they hire the right coach afterwards is a separate conversation but I’m fine with these teams being proactive in realizing that there’s a problem.

Wasn’t Pete D (Old Sacramento GM) wanted to fire Malone.

Now Pete D gets hired in Denver for a front office position, and they hire Malone.

    I’m confused.

Makes you think it was Vivek’s crazy meddling to get rid of Malone, not a beef with D’Alessandro.
