paradigmnParticipantA little surprising I guess considering Duke only has one commit coming in so far… Rasheed Suliamon…so he would of played a little more than he did this year.
DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman Michael Gbinije will transfer out of the program, school officials announced on Monday. The Chester, Va., native averaged 1.7 points and 0.8 rebounds per game while playing in 19 contests last season. Gbinije leaves Duke in good academic standing and is expected to transfer to another Division I school.
"We wish Michael [Gbinije] the best of luck and we will support him through his impending transfer," said head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "He is a talented player with a solid future ahead of him."
Gbinije shot 55.0 percent (11-of-20) from the floor and made all seven of his free throw attempts as a freshman. He scored a season-high eight points and added three rebounds in a Dec. 19 win over UNC Greensboro.

mikeyvthedonParticipantSeemed like the odd man out, so I do not think this is the worst decision. I almost felt that he redshirted last year, he barely got any PT whatsoever. Seemed like whenever people were talking about Duke next year, his name was left out. They may only have one incoming frosh (still have a shot at Amile Jefferson/Tony Parker), but they do have Alex Murphy who redshirted.
With Rasheed Sulaimon coming in, it looked like Duke is intent on using a three guard rotation and that Mike might have been an odd man out. I am sure there will be plenty of schools who would love to have him. Many people will probably say that he should have stuck it out and competed for minutes, but I am sure he has his reasons for leaving. Bet he makes some lucky school pretty happy, know he had a lot of choices beyond Duke.

M-EazyParticipantThere are plenty of people off the street better than Thornton. I still don’t get how he got an offer to play at an ACC school…he’s lacking a lot.

UNCbasketballbumParticipantDuke has had so many players transfer in the last few years…..Taylor King, that Czyzk guy from Nevada, what’s goin on at Duke?

M-EazyParticipantMike Gbinije should’ve never went to Duke in the first place. His style of play does not fit with Duke. Surprised the allure of playing for Coach K is still attracting players when his offense is not for these players who excel in fast pace offenses.

It is possible that Duke just informed him that his scholarship won’t be renewed and that the kid really had little or no say in the matter.

BleedingBlueParticipantI actually played with him in the gym a couple days ago and THIS WAS NOT BROUGHT UP BY ANYONE SO I’M REALLY SURPRISED. And to the dude who wondered why Duke had so many transfers over the years, Taylor King had character problems (this was revealed when he was at Nova), Elliot Williams had to take care of his mother who was sick so he went to a school that’s closer to his home (Memphis) , and Olek Czyz just couldn’t get any playing time at all.
Still we wish Mike the best. He’s a coach’s son and should succeed no matter where he goes.

BleedingBlueParticipant^ That is next to impossible. The team has 13 scholarships, with Miles Plumlee graduating and Austin Rivers going pro, they will have one spare spot even after Rasheed Sulaimon enrolls.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantIt isn’t next to impossible, and it happens all the time. From just 2008 to 2009, more than one-fifth of all basketball players did not have their scholarships renewed. Look at that release, that is the form statement for every guy who is given the option of “leave the program and we’ll help you catch on elsewhere or we’ll drop your scholarship and not help you.” I can’t guarantee that is the case here, but the fact that they have a spare scholarship does not change anything. Heck, in the local paper reporting the player leaving they include this:
“Duke has only one player, Rasheed Sulaimon, a 6-4 guard from Houston, in its 2012 recruiting class. Duke is hopeful of adding Tony Parker, a 6-9 center from Lithonia, Ga., and Amile Jefferson, a 6-8 forward from Philadelphia who is also being recruited by N.C. State.”0 - Posted on: Tue, 04/17/2012 - 1:58pm #660712
IknoBall12Participanti dont think they asked him to leave tho. I mean i would take mike over amile jefferson anyway.

akhan786ParticipantNot surprising. The kid went to 5 different highschools in 5 years. Dave Telep was right that there is a direct correlation between players who hop around in highschool and whether they will transfer or not in college.
