Mentor: Another thing I don't get

in many mocks people will say that a pick is good here and that a current star or vet will be able to mentor the new kid. Jordan was terrible to rookies in general let alone someone drafted to take his minutes away. He would go out of his way to break rookies or new Bulls during practice. One example that I have seen cited is Boston should draft Tyler because KG will be able to mentor him. From the outside KG does not appear to be the mentor type to me. I don’t have inside info on stars or veterans but I think this mentor idea is way overrated. NBA players are playing for their next contract and if they teach a rookie and that rookie starts taking their minutes that means less need for their current team to bid up their next contract. Are there NBA stars that are known to be good mentors to rookies in general and rookies at their position in particular?

I have always heard it said that he can really help young players that listen to him, such as Glen Davis and Semih Erden. He is really known for his leadership by people around the team. But he can be tough on players who haven’t listened to him, such as Patrick O’Bryant.

Kevin Garnett mentored Perkins in his time in Boston. Garnett helped him mature and greatly improved his play on the defensive end on the court. Out of respect for KG, Perkins, upon his trade from Boston to Oklahoma City changed his number from 43 to 5 (Garnett’s number in Boston) out of respect for everything that he learned from Garnett in their time together.

KG probably isn’t playing for another contract, he’s made plenty of money, and when vets get to that age when they are on the way out they want to leave an impact in the form of a protege; Chauncey and KG are the two that spring to mind as vets who mentor young guys on their teams. Guys who really love the game will try and give back even after they retire.
Also, with the Jordan comment; MJ brought out the best in Scottie and vice versa, so you can’t ignore that example.

KG probably isn’t playing for another contract, he’s made plenty of money, and when vets get to that age when they are on the way out they want to leave an impact in the form of a protege; Chauncey and KG are the two that spring to mind as vets who mentor young guys on their teams. Guys who really love the game will try and give back even after they retire.

Veterans are crucial – why do you think the wolves suck each year ? they get young draft picks and don’t put them with quality vets who can teach them – They had to hire bill laimbeer to help out Kevin Love.
Ben Wallace was good for Monroe. Chauncey was great for Lawson
