asmartin626ParticipantI saw a comment on the lance Stephenson post about the possibility of Memphis blowing it up if Conley leaves. I said all season I thought they should. I thought they should of traded Conley before the deadline and then gauge interest in Gasol and Randolph in the offseason, but regardless… Just wandering what you think Gasol and Randolph would get you in the trade market. Both are on the veteran side of their careers, Randolph on a 1 year deal that reasonable and Gasol for a couple more years, but I could see both helping a squad trying to win the title. I’ve just never seen this Memphis team as one that could win it all, no matter what their record was. So what you would give from your team to get them or what do you think is a reasonable option?

CavFanPRParticipantGasol could get you a decent package. Randolph is probably a salary dump at this point.

901GrizzParticipantI’m from Memphis and have followed this team closely since they moved from Vancouver. I did think they had a chance last year, especially early on in the season. Early on last year they were probably the second best team behind Golden State. Even took Golden State to 6 games in the playoffs. The difference from the beginning of the season and the end was 3 point shooting from Courtney Lee. Lee was shooting the 3 ball at a very high rate, which allowed floor spacing. Anyone that has followed this team knows that has been our biggest weakness for years. Great frontcourt in Randolph/Gasol but is often mitigated by our lack of shooting. They have yet to address this issue. This season we were historically injury ridden and now Joerger is gone which I was disappointed to see happen.
To answer your question I would blow this team up. It’s been a fun ride. The whole grit & grind. But we will no longer be competitive with this roster. I love Conley/Randpolph/Gasol, but they won’t lead them to a championship. They all kind of remind me of Pau Gasol. Pau was never going to take Memphis to the Finals alone, but you saw how great a fit he was next to player like Kobe.
Maybe you can do a sign and trade with Conley. Marc still has value around the league. And maybe Z Bo does as well since he only has 1 year left on his contract. I have yet to think of any kind of trade scenario for these 3. But yes, blow it up.

HitsterParticipantThanks for picking up on my original point in the Lance Stephenson post. It suddenly occured to me that Marc Gasol might be a good trade target for a team especially if Mike Conley moves on during FA.
Would Boston make an offer for him I wonder, the 3rd pick might be a step too far for a 31 year old guy who missed 30 games last season and 23 in 2013-14. But Boston have so many other picks due to them they could still offer a very nice package for Marc. A lot would depend if Boston decided to target a player like Marc to possibly attract a very top FA like KD.
With former Grizz Coach David Joerger in Sacramento the idea to team up Marc Gasol with DMC could be tempting. 8th pick could well be of interest to Memphis in any possible deal.
Also with Pau Gasol being an FA, I could see a team possibly looking to link the two brothers up in a frontcourt.
Z-Bo turns 35 next month but he was still putting up over 15ppg on slightly reduced minutes last season and has ironically after the Jailblazers years become a very solid veteran pro. He is due $10 million next year which is decent value against the new salary scale and any team acquiring him could extend him on lesser money. He would probably like to be on a legit contender at this stage of his career as he may not have that many years left as he has played 15 seasons already in his career, Z-Bo might be worth a later or protected first rounder perhaps.
As I said I think it all depends on what Conley does but if he did jump ship then Memphis could go into rebuild fairly easily. If they could get decent picks this year, players drafted high or potential high picks in trades coupled to a likely high pick of their own.
The only issue about Memphis going into rebuild is that they owe Denver a top 5 protected pick in 2017 or 2018 and unprotected in 2019. If Memphis went into rebuild then they could end up being say 6th or 7th in draft lottery and a very nice pick falls to Denver.
Memphis also owe the Celtics a first rounder 2 years after they send Denver the pick this could be as soon as 2019 and is only top 8 protected then so they could lose a late lottery first rounder then or down to a totally unprotected pick in 2021. They could certainly get this back in any deal with the Celtics for Marc Gasol I assume.
